Recall alert: Over 300K Jeep cars at risk of catching fire while parked, driving
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced that over 300,000 Jeep vehicles are being recalled after discovering that an internal issue could catch the car on fire.
Chrysler is recalling certain 2020 through 2025 Jeep Wrangler 4Xe and 2022 through 2026 Grand Cherokee 4Xe vehicles.
In total, 320,065 vehicles are being recalled because the high voltage battery may fail internally and cause a vehicle fire while parked or driving.
Chrysler estimates that 5% of these recalled vehicles could have the defect. The company added that as of Oct. 24, there have been 19 fires and one reported injury.
"Owners are advised to park outside and away from structures and not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is completed," the NHTSA stated .
A remedy is under development. Interim letters explaining the safety risk are expected to be mailed Dec. 2. Additional letters will be sent once a final remedy is available.
