Titan Ridge Volcano

Most volcanic eruptions are from the usual suspects — Etna , Kilauea, Dukono , Shiveluch and others that are almost constantly active. But sometimes an eruption arrives out of nowhere, like the emergence of Parícutin in a Mexican farmer's field in 1943, or the sudden appearance of pumice in the South Pacific eventually traced back to Havre Seamount .

(Robert Simmon/NASA/NOAA/MODIS/VIIRS)On May 8, 2026, seismometers detected a previously unknown volcano in the Bismark Sea (north of New Guinea and famous for a WWII naval battle) as it rumbled to life. A day later satellites captured pictures of the eruption, first a slender tendril of pumice and then a puff of white water vapor. The area is known for complex sea floor geology and volcanism is common nearby, but there was no known volcano or seamount in that location. Within days it had developed into a major eruption with a plume extending more than 60 miles (100 kilometers) to the northwest.

(Robert Simmon/NASA/MODIS)The first (relatively) cloud-free high resolution satellite images arrived on May 15th from Sentinel-2 . These revealed two centers of activity, each indicated by a distinct steam plume rising off the boiling ocean. The surrounding seawater was itself discolored by dissolved gasses and fragmented lava. Drifting pumice rafts colored the ocean surface light gray. Local fishermen described the eruption from up close: "It sounds like thunder and the sea smells like metal burning."

(Robert Simmon/Sentinel-2/Copernicus/Sentinel-2)While the progress of an eruption is difficult to predict precisely, NASA reported that this event was unlikely to become explosive. It may, however, create a new island where previously there was only open ocean.
