Bartlett Arboretum Park ·$$

This Kansas landmark was established in 1910 by Dr. Walter Bartlett and is spread across 15 acres (6.07 hectares) of private land consisting of gigantic oaks, cypress and Japanese maples among other majestic trees. Now run by Robin Lynn Macy, former Dixie Chick member and founder, Bartlett Arboretum is open only during concerts, weddings and by appointments. You will also find many flowering trees and plants which makes this place even more endearing. Hosting country music festivals and shows, some of the artists who have performed here are Jimmy LaFave and Vanessa Whalen.

I've been to several concerts at the Arboretum, but the last one I attended will be the last one for me, because of what began with someone standing up two lawn chair rows in front of me and his hoodie rising to reveal a handgun stuck in the back of his waistband. After taking a moment to ponder what I'd do if he pulled out the gun, I hurried to locate the Arboretum's owner to alert her and see if the venue has security. They don't. Later, the owner told me she'd put up a No guns sign. But, when I traveled to the next concert (with very mixed feelings) I learned she'd decided not to. So, I decided to leave. Then, on my way to my car, I stopped to tell someone walking to the entrance why I was leaving. To my shock, she said she had a gun with her. Here are music venues in the Wichita area that DO have security (incl. security staff and scanners at the entrance and clear bag policies): Hartman Arena, Intrust Arena, the Orpheum, the Cotillion, and the Wave. And, as it happens, the Wave will soon actually feature a performer scheduled for the Arboretum.

My husband and I visited this week hoping to see tulips and flowering trees, and we were simply thrilled with our visit! The grounds are gorgeous, and we met so many genuinely nice people, from the owner to the volunteers who so lovingly care for the gardens. It’s worth a visit.

Lots of small sized play homes for the kiddos coupled with incredible landscaping. This is a place that never gets the attention and kiddos that it truly deserves. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable. To the very best of my knowledge there isn't anything like this place in a 300+ mile radius. The closest would be St.Louis. The entrance fee is strictly a voluntary contribution. There is no set amount. $5 is suggested.

I have known the folks who keep this place going, for years, but never had the occasion to visit. I went for a concert last week and was impressed! I hope to bring family back to visit when we are in the area. After the concert (a really good band named Driven), I asked the owner for her recommendations and the best way to walk the grounds and not miss anything. I did so and though it was very beautiful and worth the walk, I found myself wishing I had the time to sit in one of the many places provided, and take in the peace and solitude of these incredible gardens and huge trees. It is definitely a place we want to travel back to with our kids and grandkids, just to explore and relax with a picnic. Very cool place for acoustic music in a beautiful outdoor venue. They even had local food vendors (very good) and vegetables from the gardens. Kudos to the owners for their dedication bringing this 100+ year old place back into a thriving and inviting place!
