The BLO has gone downhill since it left the Schubert. I would not recommend wasting your money or precious time going to this. BTW. ..it changes Venue so often and sometimes in areas you would not want to venture.

Purists might not like this performance as it was in English, set in current times and was actually relevant. Food trucks before hand with a carnival, then we go to the big top where the performance takes place. Oh, and they sold Freak Show Cabernet by the bottle to take to the show. Excellent singing, comedy alternating with tragedy. I was laughing during the 2nd scene at the same time knowing full well what the deadly outcome would be. BLO is pushing the envelope and is an amazing group. Their Rape of Lucretia and Handmaid's Tale last season seem to be a precursor of what they can really do. I can't wait to see the next production!

Boston has suffered for many years since Sarah Caldwell stop producing The Boston Opera. The Boston Lyric Opera took over as our main source of Opera and has year by year grown and developed into close to a World Class Company. The recent production of Rigoletto was superb with a Soprano who did an Aria laying flat on her back. The Audience gasped as she reached the high notes. Each production shows more drama, settings and promising singers. BLO is ready to invite the best. Hopefully it will find a better Venue than the Schubert Theatre which doesn't have the best accoustics. Nevertheless....if in town during the season.....buy a ticket. You will enjoy it thoroughly.

I've been attending opera performances by the BLO for the last 15 years and have yet to be disappointed. I believe the Boston Lyric Opera to be one of the true gems of Boston's cultural scene. If you've never attended the opera, I would suggest starting out with something whose music you may already be familiar with (ex., Bizet's Carmen or Mozart's The Magic Flute). Since most of the opera's are not in English, English text is projected on screens on both sides of the stage, allowing you to enjoy the beauty of the original language and still keep up with the plot. The BLO does a phenomenal job on all their productions. You really owe it to yourself to give opera a try!
