Founded in 1845, New England Historic Genealogical Society is one of the oldest genealogical organizations in Boston. The organization specializes in the collection and preservation of genealogical and historical matter related to New England families. It maintains a collection of books, databases, manuscripts and research materials. Its manuscript collection includes articles, images, charts, and Bible, town, cemetery and church records. The association also specializes in the publication of genealogical guidebooks, source records, classic reprints, and scholarly and educational monographs. In addition, New England Historic Genealogical Society serves as a cultural and educational center. It organizes various events, including seminars, historical presentations and guest lectures. The organization also publishes a journal, "The New England Historical and Genealogical Register" for its members.

I have been a life member for nearly 70 years. First the Society took away the ability to borrow books by mail. Then the paid research was unhelpful - I send everything I had found in my personal research but the staff simply repeated my research and did not provide significant additional information. The American Ancestors magazine gives too much space to staff, board and other self-congratulating articles and photos, rather than articles of historic or genealogical significance. Still, the digital material available online is excellent. I have not been to the Society's offices except via mail and internet.
MoreRecently visited here for the first time to research my ancestry. There is a large collection of resources available to view and copy. There is a charge to photocopy but no charge for copy to thumb drive. I found the manuscripts very interesting to view. You find the manuscript reference, then bring it to an attendant for retrieval. Very nice service and friendly staff. Large table areas to spread out your work. Membership or entrance fee is required.
