Built in 1859, the Gibson House was the residence of Charles Hammond Gibson. The family preserved the original decor and converted the house into a museum after his death. The structure is constructed with brownstone and red brick. The interiors are laced with black-walnut woodwork, elegant wallpapers, imported carpets, furniture, paintings, sculpture, photographs, silver, porcelain, curios, and 18th-century family heirlooms. Several filmmakers have used the house as a setting for period films, notably Merchant-Ivory's 'The Bostonians'. The Gibson House Museum was officially opened to the public in 1957, and is a National Historic Landmark.

tripadvisorMy husband and I stayed in the Back Bay for a fall get away and decided to tour the Gibson House Museum. It really is a gem! The house has been beautifully preserved and was like Upstairs/Downstairs if you ever watched that show. The docent was very knowledgeable and did a great tour. It was very affordable for tickets and we booked day of, there were probably 10-12 people in our tour group. I would do it again, I really enjoyed it. If you ever wanted to know what Victorian Row Houses on Beacon Street were like, this is your chance!
MoreI booked and paid for a visit to the Gibson House. However, I arrived 20 minutes late, and there was no one there. I immediately sent an email apologizing and asking to reschedule the visit. I never received a reply, and now I’m getting emails asking me to rate the visit! It feels like a mockery. I cannot recommend this tour, and I will post this comment on the travel sites I use.Paulo Eduardo Santos
MoreI've seen many historic sites in Boston but this is an authentic gem. It is a time capsule of a town house in Victorian times. You expect to see the owners return home and find these outlandishly dressed invaders. If you love the gilded age show you will find this Beacon St town house interesting to explore. We got a tour basement to third floor bedrooms. This was family's main home and in summers they had a summer house in Nahant near 40 steps beach. It is still there but now private home. Docent was very knowledgeable about the Gibson family and all the Victorian era household technology. I want to return for one of their specialty tours. Tour was supposed to be 45 minutes but docent left plenty of time for questions. Photos allowed.
MoreBeautiful home. Interesting history. Great docent.
MoreReally interesting historic residence in Back Bay Boston with many original pieces of furniture and art work. Guide was very friendly and informative. Can ask as many questions as you want.
