My wife stayed there for one night. She has many health issues and did not hear from her. I called the front desk and asked to speak to her. Desk said she could not confirm anyone with her name had registered. I said she is ill and had to speak to her. The clerk said no one with her name had registered. I panicked and said she told me she was there and needed someone to check on her. She refused. I called the Dartmouth PD and requested a wellness check. They were greatand did find she was ok and her phone was dead. The clerk was rude and ignorant but worse than that unresponsive to the fear something was terribly wrong. She is back home in Florida far from that appalling attitude.

We were on our way to a function on Cape Cod and thought this motel looked quaint. It was clean but the odor of cigarettes and the lack of amenities was terrible. They charge a modern 90.00 per night for a motel that is steeped in 1970. 2 Towels,in the bathroom and two, well used, face cloths. The air conditioner was obviously broken so no ventilation at all. The carpet was clean, windows were filthy. The bathroom was very old but again, very clean. The front desk clerk was a charming older woman. The in room refrigerator was large enough to be in anyone's home kitchen. This would have been an OK place if it just didn't smell so bad. This motel is worth 60.00 a night at best.

My Husband and I wanted a night out. We arrived at the Moby Dick Motel at 3 pm, we then went out came back went out for dinner we went back to the Motel just as we were getting cozy my husband went to the bathroom and came out with a look on his face, I said what's the mater he saw three coceroach 's I then got up and I saw one crawling under the sink along the pipe I said lets go we shook out all our clothes.. I went to the office it was 9 PM at that point, I told the women I can't stay here we saw three coceroache's she then told me she had the room sprayed twice and I said I can't stay here I don't want to bring them home with me.. her Daughter came in the office the women said to the daughter I have lost so much money with this .. I said that's not my problem.. I realized they new they had a problem my God.. I said even if I get some money back then then said we have to look . they went to look came back and said nothing is there.. I said you know what keep the money but you have a problem here and I will let other people know. the daughter started yelling .. I will also make the appropriate phone calls ! they should make sure when they had the room sprayed that those things were no longer there before rented a room to anyone.. I was appalled at the way we were treated..

I am a big fan of independent hotels. However, I couldn't let this one slide. It had all good reviews, so I figured paying double for the BW up the street wasn't worth it. Check-in area is TINY, but that didn't bother me. Rooms are straight out of the 1960s, but that didn't bother me either. What did bother me was the fact that I could not breathe in my room (Room 1). The stench of cigarette smoke was so potent that I spent the entire evening outside, including eating dinner, until I absolutely had to go inside. I asked about other empty rooms, but was told there weren't any (except smoking rooms). I was assured that Room 1 was NOT a smoking room, though I pointed out that it had both a big bucket full of sand AND a traditional ashtray outside it. Not persuaded, the front desk told me that there was a guy and a girl in there last, but they smoked outside, not in the room. Preposterous. I'm not a smoker. I'm also not allergic to cigarette smoke, or particularly picky. But this was by far the worst cigarette stench I have ever experienced. It kept me up most of the night and I had to launder everything I had with me when I got home after one night. Absolutely awful. Even the box air conditioner blew air that reeked on the fan setting. Other rooms may be better if they are definitively non-smoking rooms, but I was not given the opportunity at any point to specify, and when I tried to, I was assured it was a non-smoking room. Also, I believe the bed had bedbugs - I have itchy bites on my ankles. On the upside, the lady at the front desk was helpful with food suggestions.

I really wanted to like Moby Dick more. Some other lodgings in the area have very mixed reviews; these were 5-star. The price was good. Their website is very promising. I like the idea of enforced quiet hours and diligent bedbug precautions. The person who took my phone reservation was friendly and pleasant. The first inkling of trouble should have been when we stopped for directions. The women in the drugstore gave my friend and me funny looks and said, You're not from around here, and It's right near the strip club. The office is a tiny cubbyhole in which three are cramped. You talk to the clerk through a window like an old-fashioned bank teller or train-ticket wicket. There's only room for one at the counter. The office provides hot water, a coffee-maker and a little cabinet of teas. Among the cute and funny signs in the office is a very long list of rules (is this one of the joke plaques or should we take them seriously?, we wondered: any suspicious or illegal activity will be reported to the police) and a notice that video and audio surveillance are in effect. The rooms are unique; quaint could apply, and they were clean. Each has a different style of decor, with nice touches like interesting pictures and a cute bathmat. They have no phones (who doesn't have a cell phone? the website asks. Well, my friend and I had one borrowed phone between us, with horrible roaming charges). Out front, near the noisy road, is a battered pay phone with, if I recall, only one door. The person I phoned is hard of hearing, but he couldn't hear me at ALL and I don't know if the phone was partly to blame. The in-room wi-fi was sketchy. Sometimes it came in. Sometimes I had to open the door. Once I had to sit out in the cold after wandering around the parking lot trying to pick up the signal. The manager did kindly give me a key to another unoccupied room where she thought the signal was stronger but I couldn't get it there either. Unfortunately, later on, the list of rules and the funny looks in the drugstore began to make sense. There really is a club a couple of blocks away. The people next door to me arrived at 11 pm and left at 12, and I could hear most of what went on in between, from the loud-stomping arrival through to the conversation afterward. I thought about complaining. However, it was cold out and after driving all day, I was very tired and didn't fancy either slogging over to the office in my flipflops and jammies, or having to get dressed again. Besides, if neighbours find out you complained, what's to stop them from damaging your car or something before they leave? Or coming back later and doing it? Since they were gone by midnight & I eventually slept, I didn’t pursue it. The next night we returned a little after 9 p.m. from an exhausting day to find the activity on the other side, adjacent to my friend's room, and with the blind open. She was very tired and upset. I offered to go over to the office and complain for her, and to help her pack up to change rooms, but she didn't want to bother. Next morning she said they woke her up starting again about 6:30. Also she remarked on a rumbling noise that went on and off for much of the night, like a generator or something. I heard it as well, but couldn't from my own room next door. The fact is, Moby Dick's walls are very thin. I have a video of my friend and me conducting a conversation through the wall from our respective bathrooms. We could also hear each other's plumbing quite loudly. Other quirks include the pictures being screwed to the walls; and my friend could use the fridge or the microwave but not both -- only one plug so she had to unplug the fridge for a minute to heat something in the micro. I chose Moby Dick based on the positive-sounding website and the good Trip Advisor reviews. An important lesson in statistics was reinforced: you need an adequate sample size to prove a point. Three previous reviews were not enough. I feel sorry for the owners. The people were nice. And if you don't tell hotel owners about a problem, how are they to fix it for you? Perhaps we should have, but... see previous reasons. I think what we have here is a pretty decent little 3- to 4-star family-run motel (4 if it had phones), plagued by 1-star clientele. I guess they do their best. But we had come a long way to attend a memorial service for two good friends tragically killed, and this is not the backdrop I would have chosen. Our stay at the Moby Dick has become one of those “famous inside jokes” that friends share. For a good time, call Moby Dick. Just maybe not on a weekend.
