tripadvisorWe went for the ice cream and stayed for the animals. Warning : two scoops is A Lot of Ice Cream! There is a pleasant room and outdoor seating to enjoy your cones. Then you just walk up the hill to but tickets for the farm. I thought the $11 price per person, kids and adults seemed a bit steep. But then I see what large, creative, fun enclosures the of the animals have, and the electric lights for warmth, well kept cages and clean ground, abundance of wooden structures to play in and little sturdy tractors to ride and I can see why they need to charge that much. Plus a farm in Westbrook ! rare ! and a very welcome sight. The fountains are beautiful and the ponds too. We really appreciated all of the shade. To the person who complained about the calves. It is a very sad thing to see . It is the price we all pay for milk and ice cream and cheese. If the mothers fed their calves their would be no milk. I guess we could refuse to eat veal .
MoreToday I visited Smiling Hill Farm with friends, for an appointment to snuggle with baby goats. We really enjoyed our experience with the staff person, and the momma and baby goats were a delight. We were encouraged by both staff, and signs on the outside of the barn, to go visit the 3 day old calves. This is what haunts me. Baby calves were chained, by the neck, to pens so small, and chains so short, they couldn’t move, and had to lie on the cold floor, separated from their mothers. The farm describes themselves as humane. How is this humane? And why would you encourage young children to go see this, like it’s a Disneyland exhibit? It looks to me like the calves are being prepared to be processed into veal. This is not humane, it’s downright cruel.
MoreWe stopped by just to have some ice cream -- there were loads of flavors to choose from, and very good quality! This is a really popular place for kids because of all the farm animals and activities, but it's worth visiting just for the hilltop views. You can also buy their other products (blueberry milk, anyone?) in the ice cream parlor, and they have salads, soups and sandwiches that you can eat in their little dining area or on the outside patio.
MoreIf you have young children or grandchildren this is a must go to if you are in the area . It is all walking around a farm with many different kinds of animals and the children can get up close but not touch. It was a wonderful time with our 4 year old grandson
MoreWe have brought our grandchildren here for the past 8 years just brought the youngest one last week. S hes 3 years and was so excited she didn't know where to begin. There was so much for her to do and to learn. Her favorite was the baby goats and ponies, one baby goat wanted to do yoga on her back she loved it, they were so gentle with her. And of course she had ice cream! Will be going back for sure....
