Cross Jewelers Jewelry Retailer

In 1908 William Cross opened his jewelry making shop in Portland, Maine. William was a master jeweler having perfected his skills with Greenleaf & Crosby in Jacksonville, Florida. As his small business grew, he surrounded himself with the best and brightest young men he could find and taught them the secrets of designing and making jewelry of exceptional quality. By 1925 Cross Jewelers had grown to employ 19 craftsmen and was Northern New England's preeminent manufacturer of fine jewelry and custom diamond engagement rings. When Willaim passed away in 1931, his son, Linwood Cross, took over the day-to-day management of Cross' jewelry design and manufacturing concern. During World War II Linwood transitioned Cross from manufacturing whole sale, to selling directly to the public with the stores craftsmen working individually with retail customers, a model of operation still retained today. In 1976 Linwood Cross retired after 45 years of running the store. His grandson, Ralph Pride, acquired and continued operating the family business into the present. With the arrival of the internet and national exposure, Cross has developed a nationwide following focused on four major categories: Diamonds & Diamond Styles, Blue Sapphires, Maine Tourmaline, and Jewelry Inspired by the Coast of Maine.

Very recent story. In July ('22) I purchased a bracelet from Cross Jewelers for my daughter’s 21st birthday. I had never heard of them prior and had chosen them from a list of other jewelers offering similar product. I liked their reviews. When the gift was delivered by FedEX, it was dropped off at the wrong address and disappeared. The folks at Cross were tremendous! They had an alternate package ready to go, even prior to FedEx's admittance that it was they who goofed up. But it gets better: Adding to complexities, my daughter is a Mate on a charter yacht and the vessel was out on a trip. Coordinating the delivery window of opportunity with staff at Cross was seamless however. Three people I had interacted with all had full knowledge of my situation and was in a position to be immediately helpful. On each of my many calls to them, I never had to re-explain in order to “get to the right person”. They all knew of the matter. I can only say that I am glad I chose such a reputable outfit. And, by the way, the bracelet was beautiful and my daughter was thrilled.

I purchased a sapphire necklace for my wife online (anniversary) on Oct 1 and paid for overnight delivery thinking it would arrive by 10/5. On 10/4 called for a tracking # Oh that will go out sometime this week So I cancelled the order.THe frustrating part of this experience was there was no apology, no offer to ship overnight (still had one day left) No this woman only wanted my Cc# to cancel this transaction and be done with me. attitude was don't care if you buy this or not. STAY AWAY especially if it's an important occasion.

Some of the nicest looking jewelry you will ever have seen in one gallery. We stop every year and always find something to purchase. The staff is very friendly and no pushy sales. They make you feel very much at home. Their selection is the very best of Maine jewels. A must stop for us every trip to Maine. Many visits for us.

My fiance and I visited this past spring to shop for engagement rings. They were the first store to listen to what I was asking for (solitaire, yellow gold, within our budget) and help us within those parameters, without espousing on why we didn't really want those things. Instead, we were given helpful information, like how the color grade of the diamond could be lowered because we were setting in yellow, and helped us come up with a perfect ring that was right at the top of our budget range. (we had originally come in about $1000 under, but moved to a thicker band because of how clumsy I am) We already plan to buy our wedding bands from them (The Sea Light bands) and to use them as our jeweler for the foreseeable future.

For years I have followed the ads in Yankee Magazine by Cross Jewelers and hoped to get there in person. Finally I did! Not a fancy place; instead we found an old fashioned classic shop on the second floor with very helpful salespeople and interesting gems. I was not going to make a purchase on my first visit, but found a most interesting yellow sapphire and have not regretted purchasing it. There are so many varieties of tourmaline and sapphire, I will be returning. Most importantly was the knowledge the staff shared with us, with NO pressure. My relative wants some repair work done & they did not push her to do it right away...think about it & return. We will. After this wonderful experience at Cross Jewelers I will never go to a chain or mall jeweler. And best of all, they did not act like I was not classy or smart enough for them.
