tripadvisorLearn about Maine’s history with authentic artifacts- from founding, Revolution, Civil War, and modern times. Well-presented exhibit about Italian immigrants working granite and eventual labor organizing.
MoreThe Maine Historical Society has 2-5 exhibition areas depending on what is on display and how you'd like to push the pen. These seem to rotate around without a main permanent exhibit. When I went they had a very fine Revolutionary War exhibit focused on the events around Portland Maine. Overall it was very informative and had a good selection of artifacts. I also liked that different prespectives were presented, like the Abanaki side of the war.Attached is the Henry Wadsworth Longfellow house, which has an added admission price. The house is worth a visit, but there are a couple of downsides. First, they want you download an app to your phone to take a verbal tour. I hate downloading stuff to my phone willy-nilly so I opted out. They did give me a handout which explained enough to my satisfaction. Second, you have to wear protective covering over your shoes. They provide this covering, but it can make for slippery footing it you hit the wooden floor incorrectly.Overall, both sites were worth the time and effort, and the docents in the Longfellow house were very friendly.
MoreThis isn’t the first thing I would doin Portland. We paid $15 each for this one-story museum plus the Wadsworth LongfellowHouse next door. Exhibits change but we saw one on climate threads and a surprisingly interesting small one on the history of the tee shirt.
MoreInteresting display of native Americans culture is what is presently displayed. They rotate displays so may be different on down the road.
MoreHelpful staff, clean restrooms and a nice Gift Shop. There are Henry Wadsworth Longfellow books displayed. His boyhood home is right next door. You may download an app to listen to while in the home. Tickets are purchased at the Historical Museum. There is a beautiful quilt with treaty information on it! Amazing work!!!Plenty of Maine history, artwork and information.
