Built as a replacement for the Gothic-style church that burned down in 1956, the majestically modern Cathedral of St. Joseph built in was built in 1962. The cathedral is beautifully adorned with stained glass, elegant bronze bells and ceramic-titled murals that surround the altar of this impressive edifice.

tripadvisorExquisite! This church is a must see. It's so unique. The windows are unbelievable. Best to go before 11 or after 3 probably so that the sun is hitting the windows. They are beautiful regardless but the sun through them is gorgeous.
MoreThe modern Cathedral of St Joseph was built in the early 1960s to replace the old church destroyed in a fire. The project was visionary - and well funded. It is a true glorification of Christianity, starting with the huge bas-relief of St Joseph and intricately carved bronze doors. On entry, there is a finely engraved glass wall, by Givanni Hajnal. When you pass through, there is a massive impression of size and celebration. At one end, you will see the largest modern ceramic mosaic in the world, the work of Italian artist, Enzo Assenza, who also made the bronze doors. At the other end is the organ and a large stained-glass window. The whole space is illuminated by the tallest and largest stained-glass windows imaginable, works by Frenchman Jean Barillet. St Joseph's is an extraordinary place to visit and should not be missed if you are in Hartford.
MoreSt.Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford is a huge and quite ugly building from the outside. It’s almost too big. Inside however it’s really good.
MoreIt's unusual to visit an old (for America) city like Hartford and see a non-traditional Cathedral like this one. The design is futuristic and even evokes space technology in places, while still retaining classical cathedral elements. I admired this balancing of novel design elements with tradition. It still looks like a place-of-worship and not a contemporary art museum.
MoreI was visiting Hartford, and as a Catholic, I just had to visit here. I attended the 7:30am Mass in the morning. The building is a little more modern looking, but very spacious and beautiful. I was very impressed by the architecture and artwork of the cathedral. I would recommend anyone, Catholic or not, to visit here.
