Resting behind an opulent French-Gothic Revival visage, the cathedral is rightly situated in the heart of the city. Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart was constructed over the course of nearly a century, specifically built to feature views of the mountains to the west and downtown Manhattan to the east. First proposed in 1859, the cathedral's cornerstone was finally set forty years later. It wasn't until 1954 that the church was completed and consecrated. Pope John Paul II visited this gargantuan cathedral in 1995, performing an evening prayer that earned the cathedral the rank of basilica. Rightly dubbed as the Monument of Faith, this elegant basilica is adorned with sharp arches and glorious chandeliers giving way to the stunning altar. The Cathedral Basilica regularly holds concerts that are open to the public, played on the largest pipe organ ever created by the Schantz Organ Company. Commanding Newark's beautiful landscape, the basilica is one of the most treasured edifices of the city.

tripadvisorBeautiful. I was accompanied by a very well travel friend and he said this church can rival many European cathedrals in Europe ln both architecture and beauty. We went during the week as they are opened to the public but I believe you need to enter thru the Rectory. They also are closed daily for lunch and reopen after. This church is located near Branch Brook Park well worth riding thru or in spring having lunch. We toured and prayed after a visit to the Newark Museum. I enjoyed some quiet time between the Lord and myself. Visit. You will not be disappointed. BTW located near a school so parking may be a bit tight but I think there is parking by the rectory. I was able to get off street parking but we went early. Newark has much to offer.
MorePlace is spectacular. Wish I knew about this one earlier. Beautiful cathedral, nice pics, quiet place to pray and easy to find. To enter, go to side entrance, not main door as it is locked. Truly recommend it!
MoreIt was a nice evening for a walk up the hill to see this beautiful cathedral.A very nice lady let me go in even though the sign showed only open to 5 pm on Monday. I got there at 6 pm
MoreThis is a work of art; as cathedrals go. It is a very valid cathedral; big vaulted ceiling, large stained glass windows, great organ. It's next to a large beautiful park with cherry blossoms that equal Washington dc.
MoreSacred Heart Cathedral Basilica is a magnificent church built in a splendid French Gothic style. The striking interior is filled with beautiful sculptures, carvings, mosaics, and stained glass, including three gorgeous rose windows. It's one of the largest cathedrals in the country, and you immediately feel a sense of awe when you walk in. Outside of mass, you can visit the basilica by checking in at the rectory (89 Ridge Street). The staff is very welcoming. Definitely worth a visit!
