Frederick Douglass Memorial Park Cemetery

Frederick Douglass Memorial Park, Inc. was established during the Great Depression as one of the first cemeteries in the region dedicated to serving the African American community. Over the decades, it has become a sacred space that reflects the resilience, creativity, and determination of a people who overcame systemic challenges to create a lasting legacy of hope and inspiration. It remains historically significant as the only extant, non-sectarian cemetery founded by and for African-Americans in New York City. Frederick Douglass Memorial Park, Inc., has been officially designated as a National Historic Landmark. This prestigious recognition underscores the park’s extraordinary cultural, historical, and architectural significance and reaffirms its vital role in preserving the legacy of African American heritage and history. We are an active cemetery. The grounds of the cemetery are open for visitation from 9 am until 3 pm every day.
