Known as the second oldest building in the Bronx, the Valentine–Varian House was built in the 18th Century by a local blacksmith and farmer named Isaac Valentine. The building survived the American Civil War in the 18th Century where British and American soldiers sought refuge. Finally, in 1960 the house was converted into a museum exhibiting the history of the neighborhood. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is taken care by the city of New York.

tripadvisorThe Bronx is not much visited by travelers, but there certainly is what to see. The Valentine-Varian House, today the museum of the Bronx Historical Society, was built in 1758, but was moved from across the street. Here are some interesting historical exhibits from what is today the Bronx, then part of Westchester County, during the Colonial period. Another interesting exhibit (maybe a temporary exhibit) is of the High Bridge, which has now been opened to the public, having been closed since the 1970's.
MoreI was a little disappointed in this house. While it is historically significant and well preserved, there are no furnishings in the home. The home was moved to this site from across the street. One room had a few photos of the home and a wall plaque talking about the history; other rooms were devoted to things happening in the Bronx and a gift shop. There was no “home tour” per se. The docent was a nice guy, but only seemed to know a basic history of the home. Still, the admission price is cheap enough. If you are in the area, definitely stop by, but don’t make a special trip.
MoreDon't miss it if you're in Kingsbridge with an hour to kill. It's an old historic mansion from the early Victorian era and worth seeing.
MoreThis is a modest house museum chockablock with history. Be sure to engage with the docent who will happily fill you in on the story behind the house, its move from across the road, and Bronx history generally. A tiny gift shop has a wonderful selection of books about the Bronx and NYC.
