This house has seen plenty of intrigue: built in 1740, it was originally the home of the Townsends, one of the families who founded Oyster Bay, who happened to also be members of the Culper Spy Ring for George Washington; however, the plot thickened during Revolutionary War years, when the house was headquarters for the British forces. This 20-room museum has been accredited by the American Association of Museums. This house has been honored by the State of New York and declared a part of the Revolutionary War Trails Site. This is a recognition of the Townsends' involvement in the fight for independence. The museum provides an insight in the life of the people of the Long Island before modernization changed everything.

tripadvisorFacinating experience. A chance to learn more about our history with modern educational tools. Costumed characters come to life on your hand-held device in the rooms you visit, telling you about their challenges and lives.
MoreThis is a lovely small museum with well done visuals including an excellent diorama. Our guide Joann was excellent. She gave lots of information and used the displays available to clarify her detailed review. She offered lots of opportunities for questions and was careful to point out things that might be interesting and overlooked. Note that there is a steep set of stairs to access the second floor of the house.
MoreThere is such a wealth of information on the Revolutionary War spy ring hidden in these walls! We had a great visit and tour of the museum and Townsend house that covered not only the spying but the rich history of the area and people. We got the true story of Turn and the impact of slavery in the area. Highly recommend a stop to visit site and learn of the area history. Don’t forget a visit to Young’s cemetery where many of the Townsend’s are buried as well as TR and his family.
MoreThe Museum centers around Washington's Culper Spy Ring during the Revolution but is so much more. The new Education Center opened in June 2021 and boasts augmented reality where the portraits and exhibits speak to you through your cell phones. In addition there are two wonderful dioramas of Oyster Bay in Colonial times and the Battle of Long Island (Brooklyn). There are interactive video games for the children and many interesting artifacts from the 18th Century. The main building has both the 18th Century presentation and a 19th Century Victorian living presentation. The docents are very knowledgable and accommodating along with your virtual reality option. The Spy Ring, British occupation, Colonial life, Slavery on Long Island and recreated living spaces from both the 18th and 18th Century provide a stimulating experience.
MoreThe Home is very interesting, as is the story of its owner (Robert Townsend, REvolutionary Spymaster). The staff is very knowledgable, and as a bonus,Oyster Bay is a quaint town to walk around
