tripadvisorGreat art center in many rooms, covering many artists and themes. A lot of it was thought-provoking. I was in town for the weekend and very happy I visited while there.
MoreWe went for the Made in NY exhibit. While that exhibit was okay (some good art and lots of trendy victim, equity, inclusive-themed pieces along with a lot of pseudo-intellectual descriptions,) the Center itself is quite impressive. Many exhibits throughout the year, art classes, and programs are provided to the public. The quilting exhibit in particular is wonderful. The Center has plans to expand somewhat improving access from the parking lot and including it in a West End Arts Campus along with the Carriage House Theater, Cayuga Museum of History and Art, and Case Research Laboratory.
MoreSmall museum. Art was more modern than contemporary.I didn't fall in love with any of the art, and I usually do love contemporary art museums. The best things I saw were upstairs on the second floor; there was a special exhibit of very colorful quilts, all by the same artist. It would not have been worth visiting if not for the quilt exhibit. The only place I visited in the Finger Lakes that required masks even for fully vaccinated visitors.Curators trying harder to be inclusive and politically correct than they are to display pretty art to look at. I've seen museums that are as inclusive and politically correct as this one that manage to find beautiful artwork.
MoreWe enjoyed the art museum! Got combined tickets w/ Cayuga Museum next door. It was pleasantly surprising to see such a nice art facility in a small town. The Made in NY annual show featured paintings, photographs and other pieces from artists from all over New York State. Hundreds of entries were received. The entries the jurors selected were visually appealing and often thought provoking. The paintings by Ithaca NY artist, Terry Plater, were inspired by Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad. We thought they were wonderful! We didn’t make it to the to the quilt show, but I hope to go back. When I watched the evening news on WSTM / CNY Central after our visit, this story appeared: Your Town Auburn: Schweinfurth Art Center reopens for in-person classes. If you do a search you may be able to watch the news segment which tells about the Schweinfurth Center’s reputation for quilt shows and the art classes they offer.
MoreMy husband and I visited the Schweinfurth Art Center in Auburn, NY to see the Quilts=Art=Quilts 2020 and it did not disappoint. Not only were the art quilts spectacular but the setting was beautiful. In addition, Donna Lamb, the Executive Director came out to introduce herself and Maria Welych, the Marketing Director was incredibly friendly and helpful as well. There was also another fiber exhibit that it was suggested we visit in an upstairs gallery that was phenomenal. The works were huge and complex and the story of the artist and her work was inspiring. I would go back again for this exhibit again in a heartbeat!
