Elbert Hubbard Roycroft Museum Historical Museum ·$

This museum, located in the former home of a Roycroft artisan, chronicles the life and work of Elbert Hubbard. Hubbard acquired a print shop in the Village of East Aurora in 1895 and became well-known for the beautiful books he produced. He was one of the first printers to make use of white space and endorsements in his advertising. He was the founder of the Roycroft Campus which had over 500 craftsmen in the late 1800s and early 1900s. The museum has a variety of artifacts which belonged to Hubbard and his craftsmen, including furniture, leather-work and rare books.

We had been here years ago, but found we had a free afternoon and wanted to go again on a short notice. Since Covid, I think you need to request a visit 48 hours in advance. We called and left a voice mail, and mere minutes later, Susan called and said she would try to arrange for one of the volunteer docents to show us the home. We were able to see the house and it was beautiful and interesting. I had forgotten the history of the couple who lived in the home (Gladys and George), and most of the history of Elbert Hubbard and the Roycroft movement. Thanks to Beverly, who was a great docent, for showing us the home.

This was a very interesting place to tour. Our tour guide did an excellent job. We were staying in the area and were pleasantly surprised to find this hidden gem. You really need to take the tour to learn the Roycroft history. The copper shop gallery is neat with a wide variety of hand-crafted items available and they were reasonably priced. It's worth a visit!

I enjoyed the tour given by Susan. The house is FULL of interesting artifacts. My favorites were the embossed leather wallets.I also appreciated the beauty of unusual cuts of wood used to craft the floors and furniture.

What a wonderful tour of this beautifully preserved historical home! Our volunteer docent, Susan, was so knowledgeable and answered all our many questions. The furniture, pictures & paintings, light fixtures, leather-bound books plus the many Roycroft crafts were too much to take in a glance. Look around and take it all in. Make sure you call & leave a message with your telephone number to make a reservation for your tour otherwise the house might be closed. East Aurora seems like a beautiful, clean town with plenty of restaurants & easy to find your way.

Really adds to emersion in Roycroft world. This tiny house has over million dollars of Roycroft treasures in an original period setting. It's from an actual craftsman couple, the ShideMantles, a leather craftsman and draughtsman. His work is still there and will absolutely amaze you. Docent was tremendous and there is so much to review we went over an hour. Us and another couple were on the tour and everyone was thoughtful about safety. This house is of the ShideMantle couple who lived into their ninth decade so their life and knowledge is incredibly accurate and a great glimpse of the period and the craftsman ideals. Interesting fact was Mrs. ShideMantle traded the house for her long term care. We did the Fillmore tour and this walking between the two without any troubles with very nice weather. It was a lot to take in both tours from different eras. We didn't mind it and it worked with our schedule. We did discuss that we could have split over two days and let each settle in a bit more. Thanks to the historical society for their preservation of this treasure.
