Disability Determination Services, also known as DDS, is a network of state agencies and is funded by the federal government. The agencies are responsible for developing medical evidence and making initial determination about the disability of claimants under laws. Its agencies also obtain evidence from claimants own medical sources. The agencies arrange for consultative examinations to obtain additional information. Disability Determination Services is a part of the Social Security Administration, which provides services through a nationwide network of more than 1,400 locations. The parent agency is responsible for verifying nonmedical eligibility requirements that include age, employment, marital status and social security coverage information.
