Since 1837, the name Schwables has been associated with good food and hospitality. This restaurant, at its current location since 1946, is noted for its roast beef, particularly their beef on weck sandwich, served with homemade German potato salad. Other menu items include homemade soups, hot roast turkey breast (served as a sandwich or dinner) ham dinner, roast beef dinner, and a variety of seafood items, including yellow pike, haddock, scallops, and shrimp. They also serve their famous Hungarian goulash and dumplings, which seem to be loved by most of their patrons. If you visit between Thanksgiving and St. Patrick's Day, enjoy a Tom and Jerry, a very old-fashioned cocktail made with egg better, rum and brandy which is served in vintage carnival glass cups. During the warmer months, Memorial Day to Labor Day, a popular liquid libation is Ebenezer Punch, a blend of orange and lemon juice, Southern Comfort, and lemon lime soda.
