tripadvisorBuffalo is becoming famous worldwide for its architecture, but the City of No Illusions also has a rich fine arts legacy. Charles Burchfield is probably the best known Buffalo painter. His energetic and mystical watercolors fill an entire museum here and are also featured in every major collection of American Art. To get your own Burchfield painting, print or drawing, go to Benjaman's Art Gallery. He is just one of the local artists sold out of this stunning Victorian mansion on Elmwood Avenue. You'll see traditional works that capture Buffalo's industrial past and the beautiful lakes and hills that surround her, as well as expressionist pieces inspired by both. Benjaman's Gallery is currently (August 2014) showing a beautiful exhibition of work by that artist and two of his contemporaries: George Renouard and Anthony Sisti. The show features many small, plein air oils by Renouard that demonstrate a remarkable eye for composition and deft handling of light. Sisti was a wrestler and boxer and his paintings and drawings of these gentle arts are much sought after and prized. There are a few of those here along with some fascinating drawings of women working at the Curtis-Wright aircraft assembly plant during World War II. Burchfield is represented here mostly by drawings hung in a round room off the main hall. The best of the watercolors on display is a simple blue composition of distant trees that pulsates with energy. The paintings are all tastefully framed and all the works in the show are well priced.
