Mount Hope Cemetery has a vast, tranquil expanse of burial ground near Mount Hope Avenue. While winters cover the grounds in ice, the gravestones and monuments are shrouded with the calming shadows of lush green trees during summers. Built in 1938, the architectural style of the mausoleums and sepulchres is largely Victorian with Gothic elements. It is the last resting place for some of the eminent personalities like Frederick Douglass, John Jacob Bausch and Blanche Stuart Scott.

tripadvisorI love visiting cemeteries both for the history and the scenery. This was a much cooler place than I expected. Lots of hills and valley's full of both old and new headstones. Some very unique. There were many areas of overgrown vegetation that had headstones only about 50 yrs old, which seemed odd that the area was already so unkept, but it added to the creepiness of the lot. And there was animal life if you looked hard enough.
MoreThis beautiful Victorian cemetery offers a rare combination of quiet beauty, fascinating stories, and a dash of local lore. The volunteer-led 1.5 hour tour was easy to book and well worth it. Our docent didn’t just point out the famous names on the headstones, but also brought to life the lesser-known residents with poignant and surprising stories. If guided tours aren’t your thing, fear not: the staff at the information desk are warm, welcoming, and happy to equip you with a map and a few suggestions to help you create your own self-guided experience.Bring walking shoes and an open mind,
MoreMount Hope is hilly, but easy to drive through. The volunteers are very friendly and will give you a map. We only visited two gravesites there, but I would have loved to see William Warfield's grave. Susan B. Anthony and her family are in a nice shady area that's a bit of a hike uphill, while Fredrick Douglass and his family are in a sunny area, a little way down the hill on the opposite side of the cemetery. There are signs leading you to these two historic gravesites!
MoreThis historic cemetery is a time capsule of Rochester and national heritage. Not only are there many notable locals buried here individually, in family plots, or larger organizational, church, and charitable plots, but also the well-known such as Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony.Even in January there were dozens of people out walking and enjoying the peaceful setting. And the cemetery association and its Friends group have gone out of their way to provide a detailed map of the large cemetery to help find those notables. How much nicer it must be to visit in spring, summer, and fall.
MoreWe loved biking through this lovely (albeit hilly) cemetery. Found Susan B. Anthony & Frederick Douglas’ graves. Just Google: “Find A Grave Alexander Millener” and that website will direct you to the exact spot.
