Japanese Tea Gardens Botanical Garden ·$

In 1915, the city requested a Japanese immigrant and his wife to transform an old rock quarry into a Japanese-styled garden, and a man named Mr. Kimi Eizo Jingu agreed to the task. He started with a rock house, which still stands today and is surrounded by winding pebble walkways, stone bridges, a waterfall and tranquil pools. His work transformed the old rock quarry into a garden filled with lily ponds and lush green vegetation. With the onset of World War II and the growing anti-Japanese sentiment that surrounded it, the city council changed the garden's name to "Chinese Sunken Garden." In 1983, the original name was finally restored.

The Japanese Tea Garden in San Antonio is a beautiful place. It is very scenic and peaceful. There are several pathways and even though there were quite a few people around it didn’t seem crowded.

Beautiful gardens! The first views blew us away. So pretty! The gardens were smaller than we expected but everything was pretty and they were actively cleaning out the ponds. There was a cafe it looked like but it wasn’t open when we were there. The little store had a few souvenirs and drinks.

Turning an old quarry into a tea garden was a genius idea that attracts quite a few visitors. There is no entry fee. Taking the trolley here is a sensible way to insure that you will not have any parking issues.

We came back from a 30 day trip to Asia, and was wanting to visit a Japanese Garden. Although this Garden is beautiful it did remind us more of a temple of doom because of the rock formations and did not remind us of the Japanese Gardens in Japan. It was confusing as well because the front entrance says it's a Chinese Garden, so I am interested to see what the history is here because those aren't the same countries lol Beautiful landscape though, just not what we were expecting.
