tripadvisorTour was okay, and it was free. But many of the places were just memories: This corner used to be the... Even the beautiful historic-looking train station is a complete recreation. Our guide had lots of good information, but sadly many of the gems were long gone. Albuquerque has not been good about historic preservation, or at least not in this area.
MoreMy husband and I really enjoyed our walking tour! We were in Albuquerque for a wedding, but wanted to learn more about the area. The tour was everything promised and more; including a special visit and pictures with a WW11 Navajo code talker and Breaking Bad memorabilia and pics in the candy store where the fake blue rocks were made...something for everyone. We had drinks and lunch at two of the restaurants that were recommended. Tom and James were terrific. Don't hesitate to book your tour!!!
MoreYour free volunteer guide from the Historical Society will walk you the 8 blocks from the railway at 1st Street to the City's first park on 8th Street and explain how downtown came to be from the sleepy village founded by the Spanish in 1706 to the bustling metropolis it is today. Central Avenue has been Railroad Ave and had a street car that took people from Old Town to the railroad which was called New Town for many years. Central has also been Route 66 through the city and there is that history also. You'll find out about the brawl that resulted in a sheriff's election and the first police night phone that was inside a bar. The tour visits the former Hilton Hotel where Conrad Hilton honeymooned with Zsa Zsa Gabor and the KIMO theater that is unique in all the United States. It's a leisurely walk down a historic street and shouldn't be missed. And, the price is great as it's all FREE! The tours start at 1st Street and Central Avenue each Saturday morning at 10 AM and are most often done by noon.
