This 54-acre (21-hectare) island of the James River has undergone several avatars in its time. What once started as a home to a granite quarry, served the nation during the American Civil War by housing a prisoner-of-war camp. Today, the Belle Isle has shed that avatar as well to become a city park. A great destination for people fond of the great outdoors, Belle Isle gives visitors an opportunity for walking, biking, swimming, rock jumping, sunbathing, bird watching, kayaking and even boulder top picnicking. A natural habitat for wildlife, don’t be alarmed if you come across a raccoon or duck while you’re here. Belle Isle is accessible through pedestrian and bicycle traffic via McArthur Bridge.

Reviews
tripadvisorGreat walking trail within the city, with spectacular views.
MoreBelle Isle was a very enjoyable experience. We went on a Saturday afternoon and couldn’t find parking in the main lot, but we were able to park at the top of the street. I imagine parking would be even more difficult on a warmer weekend day. The walk over the bridge was especially fun. They also have a thoughtful station for kids with buckets and trash pickers, encouraging visitors to help clean up the island and give back to the community. I would highly recommend it. The full loop took about 30 minutes to walk.
MoreThe pedestrian ridge is so awesome and offers excellent views of the river. The island has many paths to explore and also paths out to the water. Gorgeous photos taken here!
MoreBelle Isle is such a unique and entertaining place to visit. You can hike it for a quick lunch break, or you could spend all day hanging out on the rocks with friends. Cross an amazing suspension bridge, and explore the Belle Isle ruins, old fortifications, and climb the rock wall.
MoreReally fun, walked for about an hour. Plenty of shaded areas to keep cool. Loved the rocks you can walk out onto the river on!
