BED BUGS! Upon arrival, I saw a rat in the lobby. I should have walked away. But decided to stay unfortunately. The room was filthy. The carpet smelled. The bathroom had mold. I thought it’s only for 2 nights, I will survive. With no surprise I got bitten by bed bugs. Had an allergic reaction. Spent a lot of money washing all my clothes. Buying a new luggage. When I reached out to the hotel, asking for a refund, they took days to reply. Not only they didn’t refund but claimed no beg bug was found. Not true.

The Alexander Inn feels like it's from another time. I just looked at the history: It was built in 1898! I'm so glad no one has modernized it. The original Art Deco vibes are all intact. Tiling, moulding, and doors are original and all have character! The rooms smell a tiny bit musty upon first entry, but this goes away. For me, I loved everything about it. It was comfortable and the location is amazing. I had a corner room with a wonderful view of 12th St. looking towards City Hall on one side, and a view of a fantastic mural of a dancer on the other! I loved that there were lots of hangers, real glasses, a fridge, and a desk. I had a Powerpoint presentation to make, and I had plenty of room to work!I changed rooms after my work project was done (the room was booked for me by a UPenn professor whose class I visited) and that room didn't have a fridge and I couldn't control the AC. It was still comfortable and lovely, and even the fire escape view was nice. The location is fabulous if you want to visit Washington Square and Old City, and especially great if you want to spend time in the Gayborhood. You can easily walk to Center City from here as well. Side note: I'm a Philly native who grew up in Center City. This is one of my favorite parts of town. I felt lucky to stay here for this work trip! The front desk staff were very helpful, and housecleaning was helpful when I needed to get a toilet paper holder. Breakfast is minimal (bread products, hardboiled eggs, waffle maker, coffee, yogurt) but it was good. It's also great that you can use the dining room after breakfast. I would love to stay here again for another Philly visit!

The rate of $50 a day for parking at the garage was steep, With a three day stay that we had , it was $150 ($135 with discount.) In the past, there was complimentary parking at that garage when you stayed at the hotel. In today's economy, it makes a lengthy stay almost impossible.

This was definitely a bait and switch. Online photos feature a beautiful, historic building. In actuality, it is very old, rundown, and dirty. They fully charge you for your stay at check in - because they know you will be immediately disappointed once you actually see the room. Standard hotel practice is to hold a credit card on file but only charge the guest at checkout. It was supposed to be a queen room, but it was a full mattress sitting on an oversized queen platform. My 6’3” husband and I were squished like sardines in a can. The room was tiny - barely space to walk on either side of the bed, that’s it. It should have been advertised as a micro-room. It is NOT a full size standard hotel room that you expect for this price. The bathroom was microscopic - hardly space to turn around, couldn’t stretch out arms with the door closed, no counter, no water pressure, and low water flow. The concierge controls the wall-mounted A/C - you can’t adjust it yourself. It blew straight in our faces all night and it only worked well the first of our 3 night stay. The carpets were filthy. We kept our shoes on at all times. Only one bedside outlet for device charging so the other person has to use an outlet across the room down by the dirty floor. The blinds were broken and filthy. Paper-thin walls - we could hear our neighbors’ conversations and TV and people using the stairwell which was along one wall of our room. The staff was pleasant and helpful, but I have no clue how this hotel received such high ratings. They must be fake or from people who are used to worse (like hostels). This is the caliber of hotel you expect backpacking through a semi-developed country, not the U.S. We’re never coming back and would not recommend this place to anyone. And after this experience, we no longer trust Expedia ratings! This was a bait & switch. Online photos feature a beautiful, historic building. In actuality, it’s old, rundown & dirty.
