tripadvisorI love this place. I work next door. I went for the tour once with colleagues and another time to see an art exhibit. The architectural detail in the building is gorgeous and the historical books are fascinating. They have a lot of intriguing programs, too.
MoreI got day passes to the Athenaeum to work (typing on a laptop) while I was in Philadelphia for two days. It was lovely! I worked in the reading room, accompanied by other folks who were similarly absorbed in their reading or work. The room was silent, except for the occasional squeaking of chairs, and it was sunny and bright. The temperature was comfortable, the electrical outlets were easily accessible, and the WiFi was good. The people at the desk were friendly and welcoming. I had fun exploring the rest of the building’s rooms and artwork, and if I’d had more time, I would have enjoyed reading a newspaper or magazine on one of their comfy chairs in the front room, sipping a coffee. I hope to visit again!
MoreAn outstanding private library in a wonderful 19th century building facing Washington Square. Shareholders are privileged to attend a number of lectures and exhibits annually.
MoreDon’t miss this free exhibit. Beautiful house and history. You could easily spend an hour or two here. Lots of architectural drawings and statues. The library is simply stunning - see photo. The amazing clock in the Reading room (see photo) is huge. Recommended.
MoreMy friends and I had some free time and had heard of this library through word of mouth. The attractive building is right near a park with lots of inviting benches and a fountain. Inside, the Athenaeum had one room devoted to an exhibit of photography of “hidden” Philly, or those places that are abandoned or the public just doesn’t see. Very interesting. Another room was devoted to one of the Bonapartes and the library upstairs, while smallish, had lots to take in, like a clock and case, massive world globe, and other historical items. Our visit was perhaps 30-40 minutes and then within minutes we got to Chinatown to eat. The librarian was friendly and answered our questions. It’s worth taking a peek in if you’re in the area. It’s free.
