The Anacostia Arts Center is a community friendly with a blackbox theater, cafe, and meeting space. I recently visited for a playwright's musical showcase, and was impressed with the beautiful artwork by local artists and bright airy spaces. The shops have awesome local products, books, clothing and jewelry, and the owners are friendly and knowledgeable. Parking is available, but be sure to arrive in plenty of time to drive around to find a space. If you are planning a local arts event I would definitely recommend checking out the Anacostia Arts Center.

If you have the opportunity to see this performance, don't hesitate to do it! Fun, upbeat, entertaining, and inspirational to watch and listen to these talented young performers. We left feeling touched with the Christmas Spirit. Don't let the location prevent you from visiting...Easy to take the Metro and grab a short ($6) Uber to reach the Arts Center. In addition to the amazing performance, there is a collection of small artistic shops inside, plus a little deli/bakery. We didn't eat there, but there is a variety of items to choose from. Will definitely return sometime if our travels bring us back to the DC area.

The Anacostia Art Center is, naturally, in Anacostia. This are is also known as the other side of the river, or east of the river, or where people actually live. This area is starting to be very interesting, and the art center is right in the middle of it. The gallery is in the front, and when I was there they had a lot of interesting local art. The art was also exhibited in a long hallway to the rear. Along the hall were incubator stores of sorts with small businesses in them. I especially liked the second hand store. There is also a theater space and a public bathroom. You can take a bus here from the downtown, although we did Uber. The Metro is a bit of a hike, but on the way there are other streets to explore.
