One of the largest cathedrals in the world, the National Cathedral is more than an Episcopal cathedral; it is a national shrine. Being the site of several significant memorial services, the cathedral lives up to its role of a ‘spiritual home for the nation’. The final Sunday sermon delivered by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is only one among the many notable historic moments that the cathedral has witnessed. The flying buttresses, gargoyles, crypts, an enormous vaulted ceiling and intimate chapels all contribute to this architectural marvel. Furthermore, the curving walkways, well-kept hedges and spacious lawns invite exploration. When in Washington, a visit to this national treasure simply cannot be missed.

MoreStumbling upon Washington National Cathedral unexpectedly turned out to be an unforgettable experience. As I walked inside, a live concert was taking place, filling the grand Gothic arches with music so incredibly moving and beautiful that it gave me chills. It was a purely serene, magical moment that I will treasure for a very long time.
MoreThis should be a Must do for anyone visiting D.C. It is simply amazing (and huge!). We had a wonderful impromptu private tour from Joan, a great woman who has been volunteering there for at least twenty years. We wouldn't have seen half of what we saw without her. As it is, we probably saw less than 10% of what the Cathedral has to offer. We'll go again when we're back in town.
MoreThe $22 tour was one of the best tours I've ever gone on. Joe was full of information about the details of construction I would never have noticed. I would give this my highest recommendation.
MoreWe were excited to visit our nation's cathedral. It was as grand and moving as one would expect - structure wise. However, the in-your-face causes that they choose to prioritize heavily take away from what would otherwise be a moving spiritual experience. God is opposed to both pride and perversion but that is what greets you at check-in and in signage around the cathedral and in the bookstore. I wanted to feel wholesome, pure goodness and love there but that doesn't seem to be a priority for the management. Very sad that the values our nation were founded on are not forefront.
