Union Station Train Station

Built in 1908, Union Station is a testament to architectural elegance, boasting an elegant Main Hall with a vaulted ceiling that soars over 90 feet high and floors adorned with marble. Today, the Main Hall is a captivating feature, attracting visitors with its timeless charm. Hosting a diverse array of restaurants, and specialty shops, the station feels vibrant and welcoming. Its proximity to the Library of Congress and the U.S. Capitol makes it a perfect midday stop for lunch. Still a working train station, it connects to many major points in the country.

I used Amtrak today at the Washington DC Union Station. I had a mostly fair experience with the people who worked there who I encountered. They were very very helpful . I will say the 50s/60s give or take blonde woman who's around 5'10 who assists passengers when they use one of the escalators including the ones who needed to get on Cardinal 51 today. She yelled at me and told me to Move!!! when I just needed to get my one extra grey pack back that was NEXT to me. I literally did NOTHING wrong and it's extremely unfair I get treated that way since I have end stage cancer and a rare metabolic disorder while in my 40s. I'm short and look younger and look foreign so it wouldn't surprise me if that was the reason. Did she really think I would leave my bluddy backpack? Wow. I wish she would be moved to the souvenir shops cause she'd be less of a problem and danger for vulnerable people. Other than that, I'm still on the train and so far it's been fair toward me so I appreciate that.

What a ripoff luggage storage near Amtrak A - they charged me $30 for my small suitcase and another $30 for my suit attached to the suitcase in a suit carrier. So $60 for a couple of hours for what some would consider one item and hand baggage in an airline.

Think of the worst place you could go. Somewhere that combines never ending taxis who are chasing people like a horror movie. Think of a place that feels like it should be marked as level 4 so not visit. Make it worse and you have union station. Don’t go here unless you have to.

Washington Union Station is very exquisite station. I enjoyed viewing the details of the beautiful statues inside and the outside architecture of this station. Washington Union is definitely a busy place with tons of eating facilities, restrooms, and an Amtrack sitting rooms. However, the best thing about this station is how it connects you other cities quite quickly. We definitely enjoy or train adventures from Baltimore.

Washington D.C. Union Station – Metropolitan LoungeI was at the redeveloping station determined to be out of the U.S. for the week of July 4, 2026, so that I could avoid the semi quincentennial spectacle. Amtrak Vacations developed an itinerary that would take me from Union Station to Chicago, then to Seattle, then to Vancouver, Jasper, and Banff. Visitors will be seeing many changes in the station, affecting where and how passengers wait for their train. The changes include a dedicated waiting area for Amtrak ticket holders and a Metropolitan Lounge for sleeper-car passengers. The station features Wolfgang Puck on the second floor, Chopt and Chipotle among others in the food court below the main floor, and a reliable McDonald’s near the departure gates.Amtrak Vacations agent Kevin Guadagnoli did an outstanding job arranging my itinerary, starting with booking me a sleeper from Washington, D.C. to Chicago, then forward to Banff. The trip officially started with a stay at the Metropolitan Lounge in Union Station, Washington, D.C.I’ve been traveling through Union Station for about 15 years, and this was the first time I saw the inside of the Metropolitan Lounge. Nothing fancy, no free alcohol, but a decent array of soft drinks, coffee, tea, and snacks, all complimentary. One perk is the interaction of Amtrak’s Red Cap service personnel. They enter the lounge and can deliver luggage directly to your sleeper (if it’s not clear, these workers depend on tips they earn handling your stuff; be respectful and generous if you use their services).
