The Hill House Museum

Explore the history of the Hill family at the Hill House. The historic landmark reveals facts on the Hills and allows you to encounter historical treasures spanning centuries. Built in the style of an English villa in 1825, the former home of the Hill family for nearly 150 years presents a wonderful depiction of their life story. The early English decor and furnishings have been so well preserved that you may be forgiven for thinking that you have stepped back in time.

We came primarily to view the recent exhibit of historic wedding dresses but ended up really enjoying our tour of Hill House. Firstly the tours are on Wednesdays and Sundays but the house is open everyday. The website is really not very clear on that. The exhibit was very interesting showing some lovely dresses some of which were worn once while others had a family history of being worn multiple times by family members. Unfortunately the exhibit will close Sept. 23rd. Even without this special exhibit this house is definitely worthy of a visit. Built in 1825, Hill House is a beautiful house with three stories full of family belongings, furniture and decor from the 19th and 20th centuries, collected through generations, and left in their original places. You can only imagine the history that occurred there. Cost of entry is $10 (another omission on the web site) which may be a bit high but it does go toward the recent and future renovations.

Wow!!! An amazing place! It is worth the $5 admission fee. The docents are very well informed about the house and are very warm and welcoming. The place is full of items from around the turn of the century, including clothes and quilts. This is a must see! They are open on Saturdays starting at 11, but it is run by volunteers so during the week, it would be best to call ahead,

When the last surviving Hill sister died, she left the house and all of the original furnishings and even clothing to be shared with the public. Nothing is a reproduction. It is all original to how they lived. Although none of the sisters married, it is evident that they traveled the world and enjoyed their lives. Lots of steps but worth every one of them.

This is a chance to see how a wealthy Portsmouth family lived in the 19th and 20th century. A visit to this museum/home is truly a step back in time. It feels as if the family has just stepped out and will be back any time. If you are a history buff, do not miss this one!
