tripadvisorSo this is super affordable and close to DC. But…..We arrived as our camp host was leaving, his rig looked down on his luck. He stated he was no longer an employee. Near to the shower house in loop D a homeless woman complete with blue tarp and shopping cart was living. I assumed she was down on her luck- but hopefully was nice enough if rangers were looking the other way.Around 2 am I was woken by screaming- a female or child, a man yelling, and the sound of shattering glass. The NP police showed up. After that my kids were too afraid to leave the windows open and we spent a stifling night in the RV.Tonight we found blood in the shower and sink / women’s shower house. I guess the other camp hosts don’t clean daily and it is probably left over from last night’s drama with whatever camp site. This is such a wonderful facility, has so much potential if they patrolled better and ejected campers rapidly if needed. The shower houses do need a little tile repair, but I could overlook this due to proximity to DC.The camp hosts in general aren’t the retired couples- the only ones I know of don’t seem friendly, their Van has mismatched panels that adds to the Wild West (not in a good way) feel of this place. Perhaps a ranger needs to staff the campground nightly to make sure things stay calm.
MoreThe Ranger was engaging and friendly We have been to over 190 National Park, this is the worst we have been to Looking at other reviews, you would think it’s the garden of Eden Nothing really here except a campground. My city park back in Atlanta is better All I’m going to say is “WHY IN THE HELL IS THIS A NATIONAL PARK! Needs to be recommissioned
MoreThe National Park Service describes Greenbelt Park as a hidden jewel located just outside of Washington, DC that provides a sylvan escape from the busy city life where you can camp, hike, and enjoy time with friends and family. Perhaps this proximity to the crowded, bustling national capital is the key to Greenbelt Park's appeal, because otherwise, it is a pleasant but rather unexceptional forest, with respect to terrain, scenery, or wildlife. Moreover, I daresay the NPS, given its strict criteria for park recognition otherwise, would not have given this patch so much as a second glance, if it were located in any other region of the country. Drive somewhat further from the District, for example, and the many splendors of the Appalachians await. If you are here anyway, the trails are numerous and pleasant enough. But I have seen many a state and even local park that could outmatch this one.
MoreNice, clean campground and safe, too, with the Park Police right in front (and there's a Ranger station at the beginning of the campsite loops.) Accommodates RVs up to a certain length as well as tenters. There is a playground at the beginning of the park, so camping here is more on the primitive side but is a welcome respite from everything. Easy access to 95/495 and Baltimore-Washington Parkway. Give this a try!
MoreI was looking for a campground near Washington D.C. that had reasonable prices & was surprised to see that Greenbelt was part of the National park service and only 12 miles from D.C. The campground has 176 sites with hot showers in the bathrooms. There are 9 miles of trails & 3 picnic areas. (The campground is undergoing renovations and will open late spring of 2020.) We saw deer everyday. There are 2 metro stations 1 1/2 miles from the park. We found College Park the easiest to get to. Parking at the metro was around $4 during the week and free on weekends. The other option was walking from the campground to a bus stop that would take you to the metro. While we were there, ranger programs were offered on the weekend. At the visitor center we were given a paper that listed the metro station laundromat, Walmart, gas stations, etc. & directions. We found that very helpful. We definitely stay there again. Reservations are required & can be made on recreation.gov.
