A bit off the beaten path in the middle of the lengthy Eutaw Pl street park sits this romantic dedication to Francis Scott Key, author of the ‘Star-Spangled Banner’, the United States National Anthem. It was designed and executed by French sculptor Marius Jean Antonin Mercie. It depicts Francis Scott Key standing in a rowboat, with a sailor manning the oars of this seaworthy vessel. Key appears to be offering his poem to a gilded Columbia waving a flag. The facial expressions on the statues are captivating, humbling, reverent, and full of pride, love, respect and appreciation…..all at the same time. The boat appears moving on water.
