tripadvisorThis is a small museum but does have information about James Monroe and his contributions as President as well as some artifacts.
MoreSo it's a building on property he owned and likely had his law office on, but not original to the time he was there. Objects are mostly from family descendent private collection, so fairly interesting. His writing desk is a highlight. Pistols gifted from Argentina's government. Focus is on his vast career in service not just presidency. I was there when they has Mrs. Monroe's wedding dress out - although is was family legend states it was the gown she wore. So, unclear how much effort is made to validate v. present whatever the family lore is. Just 3 rooms. I guess it's worth the $6, but not much more than that. Super friendly and helpful staff person the day I went.
MoreI was quite impressed with this museum. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but there’s so much there, particularly original artifacts from the Monroe presidency, lovely portraits, and jewelry from First Lady Elizabeth Monroe! Please don’t judge a book by its cover, this is definitely worth a visit!
MoreIt's not the original building that Monroe's actual library was in but it's been recreated in the same area. Thankfully, it was protected and not knocked down because it's still a historic landmark. He was far more than just the Monroe Doctrine and this spot covers his many contributions. The staff is very friendly and it's definitely worth your time.
MoreWe stopped over to check out this museum about James Monroe. He was such an important part of negotiating with French because of his connections to buy Louisiana. It's a small museum. The staff are really nice. They have AAA discount. You could probably cover museum in 30 min. They have the history of the museum and some collections. It was an interesting experience
