Twelve people floated over the Bosher Dam on the James River in June 2022...two did not make it. Their bodies were discoved days later. Please be careful.

This put-in place for canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, and inner tubes, is easily accessed on the south side of the James River near the Huguenot Bridge. There is a wooden ramp for sliding down your canoe or kayak from the parking lot to the water. We paddled our canoe downstream, going under the Huguenot Bridge close to (but, not too close to) the Z dam. And, then we went upstream going under the Willey Bridge near the Bosher Dam. It was a great paddle!

We were told the James River was a bit challenging to kayak so go here instead for a more relaxing ride. Parking and launching kayak was no problem whatsoever and water was calm, made for a very relaxing day.

Nice parking area except holes need to be filled in at the entranceway. Porta potty available. Put in for kayaking and canoeing. Near Huguenot bridge. Nice hike from parking area going south. Trails are cleared. Beautiful views of the James River. Good for biking as well. Lots of people walking dogs. Enjoy.

This a great put in location. The day we went there were lots of people boating in this area but it wasn't crowded. We paddled from this put in upstream to the Willie Bridge. There and back was about 2 hours. The water was a 5' and the regulations of the park require life jackets be worn at that stage. This was adequately posted. The James River and the James River park system is a great resource for the city!!!Be sure to check the water levels at the Westham gage before you decide to paddle or float here.
