The Department of Public Works is the one of the largest operating departments in Lynchburg, Va., with approximately 300 budgeted personnel positions. It maintains a streets division that is responsible for the maintenance and administration of more than 850 lane miles of roadway, over 315 lane miles of road shoulders and nearly 175 miles of sidewalks. The division also supports police and fire departments in emergency events and promotes various special events for the city. The public works department also buildings and grounds division provides services for building maintenance and custodial services for various city-owned buildings, as well as sponsors the Keep Lynchburg Beautiful Commission.
