City Hall Building

Upon completion in 1895, City Hall's bell tower, at 353 feet, was actually the third tallest structure in the country. The edifice was designed in a German Renaissance Revival style by architect Henry Koch. A fire in 1929 forced the upper part of the building to be rebuilt. Solomon Juneau, the Milwaukee's first mayor, is the namesake for the large bell located in the bell tower. In 1973 City Hall was added to the National Register of Historic Places, and in 2005 it was declared a National Historic Landmark.

The Milwaukee City Hall stands north from the central Third ward, very close to the Riverwalk. It counts imo as one of the more beautiful in the US, having that European charm due to many German and Polish immigrants in Wisconsin.

We loved this building-such great history and beautiful details that really show off the era it was built-in. the building is lit up at night and we were certainly luck to have a view of the building from our Hotel room!

Most cities have torn down their classic city halls in favor of a big box store look and feel. But not Milwaukee. This classic is beautiful and credit to the city. Well worth a quick stop to look in.

We popped into City Hall as we walked around the area. It is a really interesting building from an architecture perspective, both inside and out. It is a working city hall, so visitors are welcome to wander throughout the building during business hours. Inside the building, we took the elevator to the top floor, where we could see the glass atrium roof close enough to tell that some of the historic panes are cracked. We then walked down the well-worn stairs which keep the secrets of over a century of use. Recommend a visit if you enjoy architecture and history. We wished there had been some historic city photos and artifacts on display.

Milwaukee’s city hall is a magnificent 1895 building at the corner of N Water and E Wells Streets in downtown. The distinctive architecture, the Flemish Renaissance Revival style, not only pays homage to the local population of Germanic ancestry, but also serves as a symbol of the city in general. It is still in active use as the seat of municipal government so I don’t know if you could really explore the inside, and if so, to what extent. I was happy just to view it from the outside and appreciate its beauty.
