Colonel Joel Lane played a key role in North Carolina's transition from county to state and Raleigh's capital city status. Later known as "The Father of Raleigh," he constructed this establishment in the 1760s in a primarily rural location, making it a recipient of admiration. Owned and restored by the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, the manor houses a unique collection of artifacts, paintings and furniture that archetypes 18th-century living. The historic site has accolades aplenty to its credit, and guided tours to the museum attract throngs of locals, tourists, historians and educational organizations. The manicured lawns and verdant gardens make for a serene backdrop.

tripadvisorEnjoyed a visit to this museum. We are fairly new to the area and thoroughly enjoyed learning facts about Raleigh. Our tour guide was knowledgeable and the entire staff were friendly and engaging.
MoreI was so impressed by the Joel Lane site in Raleigh. I've done a lot of historical tourism, but the tour at the Joel Lane House was one of the best I've done in a long time. Teri, our guide, was informative and a lot of fun. She presented the tour with a lot of humor. The property is beautifully restored and maintained. I recommend this as a highlight of things to do when visiting Raleigh.
MoreWe visited here on 9/15/21 while visiting friends in Raleigh. The staff and tour guide were friendly and explained who Joel Lane was and his claim to fame. I found it moderately interesting but our friends from Raleigh were much more impressed.A school group on the tour in front of us, were enthralled by the museum and tour, so it may be best for those with children.Overall, an OK place to visit.

MoreThis visit was a planned stop. I had read a bit about the Joel Lane Museum and wanted to know more. We went on a 45-60 minute tour of the house and small grounds surrounding, guided by the museum director. He was very informative and gracious and obviously had a true interest in sharing what is known about Joel Lane and his family. We enjoyed this tour immensely and would recommend it to anyone with an interest in history and culture who is traveling in the Raleigh area.
