Reviews
tripadvisorThis hotel was horrible. My family (with three small children) had wanted a hotel to stay in overnight before flying out of Charleston airport that had a pool for the kids. We arrived and went to the room on the second floor. As soon as the elevator opened, we were hit with a strong musty and moldy smell that made my daughter gag. We went into the room and it was immediately obvious the concrete walls had recently been painted white. The paint fumes made all three of my children and myself dizzy. The room was not cleaned, the bathroom door was broken, and the view from the window was a gross back area of the hotel. Needless to say we checked out right away and found accommodations at Zero George. The only positive thing I can say is that the manager helped my husband to check out and was very nice and did not charge us for the room. The pictures I’ve seen from the hotel online do not reflect what the rooms actually look like! The hotel was nothing like the pictures at all - stay away!
MorePositives: Demetria (spelling) was great the morning after our first night to help us move to another room. We moved to a King Bedroom which was my first choice and we were very happy with our room - 436. I think Jeremy was the name of the person who assisted us in getting keys and he was very pleasant. We appreciated the free shuttle and used it. This hotel is not within walking distance to downtown Charleston. The drivers were helpful, knowledgeable and courteous. The location of the property on the Ashley River and the pool is very lovely. The outdoor deck is also inviting and comfortable. We enjoyed our balcony and rocking chairs. All other amenities in the room were appreciated and comfortable. The room was quiet. We didn't hear a lot of noise in the morning. The staff was friendly and parking convenientHowever, the hotel needs updating. The carpet on Floors 2 through 4 needs to be replaced. It has a foul smell. Even though there were attempts to deoderize it, it didn't work. I think moisture from wet folks (kids) from the pool has created this problem but it is very unpleasant.Checking in could be made easier. Signage in the traffic circle basically states you can't park here, yet where can we place the car when we make our way up to the check in desk? If you want drivers to park first then check in, that signage should be posted as such. This was confusing. The electronic key didn't work on our original room. The lock was faulty. Lydia at the front desk was very nice and moved us to another room and gave us new keys. Unfortunately, what we booked was a waterview queen room and what we got was more like a partial water view room in that most of our view was of the courtyard of the building. Room 220. The safe wasn't working and maintenace fixed it.Luckily we moved to Room 436 the next day but I presume no one told the housekeepers we moved because we did not receive housekeeping for either of the two days we were there. We were fortunate to find late housekeepers and ask for coffee refills on the first night and the second night brought us fresh towels. The handset on our phone didn't work and the desk chair was either broken or missaligned but the room was otherwise lovely. A very nice gentlemen from maintenance brought us a replacement chair. I truly appreciate the attentiveness of the staff but many things on the property seem to be broken and in need of repair. It appears that after the wear and tear of families with young children and groups of partiers, an update of hallway carpet and refinishing of floors in the rooms (scratches) is in order to bring this up to the typical Marriott standard that we have come to expect.
MoreThe absolute BEST hotel on the water for the cost!
MoreI want to preface this review by saying - the price we paid was a Marriott Explore rate (family rate, much cheaper than the standard rate). We had a 2 queen room. We arrived in Charleston pretty late… around 11pm. Check in went pretty smoothly. Arrived to the room which was spacious. I know other folks have said this hotel is run down but I didn’t get that vibe from the room. It was very typical of Courtyard standards IMO. The next morning, we went downstairs to grab breakfast. I would recommend going somewhere else as we did a “build your own bowl” and it did come with half the things it said it would. Those ladies weren’t very friendly so I didn’t press the issue.. just ate my breakfast and moved on. We spent some time at the pool which was a nice area. The hotel does supply towels for the pool. They were doing some remodeling while we were there. We took the shuttle into downtown which was convenient. We opted to Uber back just because it was quicker. Overall it was good stay. The only thing they really need improvement with is the elevators. They are extremely slow and some lady said she got stuck on one for 45 minutes. We took the stairs most of the time (we were on the 4th floor and there were only 4 floors )
MoreChecked in yesterday. Room AC didn't work properly. Fridge didn't work at all. Went downstairs to flag it and the front desk was completely unattended. Not on a break, not helping another guest. Just gone. Eventually someone showed up, and rather than help, she seemed personally offended that a guest had the nerve to have concerns. The maintenance person sent to the room spoke no English, which turned the whole thing into an elaborate game of charades that nobody won.Called the GM's office this morning at 8:47 AM. Was told he'd be in by 9 and would call back. Still waiting. Reached out to Auro Hotels corporate as well. Also waiting. Apparently getting a response operates on a different timezone here.To be fair, the waterfront views are lovely. It's a shame you can't enjoy them in a room with working air conditioning, or a lobby that actually has someone in it.This is not a hospitality problem. This is a hospitality absence. A functional room, a staffed front desk, and a staff member who can communicate with guests are not luxury requests. They are the bare minimum. Nobody here got that memo.If you're traveling solo with zero expectations, maybe fine. If you're part of a group and need things to actually work, keep looking.Management: Robert Heilman, GM. Corporate: Auro Hotels, Sid Wall. Both were given every opportunity to fix this before I sat down to write this review. Both passed
