Florida Agricultural Museum Historical Museum ·$

Located a short drive away from Plantation Bay, the Florida Agricultural Museum allows visitors a sneak peek into the state's rich rustic past, when early settlers led a fairly simple life. The museum is sprawled across a pretty brookside farm, where a guided tour takes you back to the 16th century, which is when population first settled in the area near St Augustine. In this wonderful 90-minute tour, venture along in an old-time wagon that takes you through pioneer homesteads, early dairy and citrus farms, a dry goods store, and a group of buildings that belonged to the Great Depression era. Watch and learn how early Floridian pioneers went about daily life in an agricultural setting. Kids can also go horseback riding, and pet farm animals. The museum offers guided tours by appointment only.

This is a beautiful ride! The horses were so well trained, they knew what to do and it made the ride very enjoyable. Our guid was wonderful. Very knowledgeable, a deep respect and love for the animals and very personable.

We took the $12 tour. Our guide, Kristin, was pleasant and informative. The cracker house was interesting. Nothing earth shattering here, but it was authentic old Florida and the animals were a bonus. There was a moderate amount of walking.

For an absolutely wonderful and beautiful adventure, take the horseback trail ride at the Florida Agricultural Museum. I (age 74 years young) and my two Grand Boys, ages 15 and 12, loved this experience. It was a first for the boys but truly a gentle thrill to be up on these sweet, lovingly cared for horses, as we made our way through the varied and gorgeous back country just south of St Augustine. Cheryl loves her horses as her children! This was truly a special experience, which the boys want to do more of, now that they’ve had a taste of being in the peace and beauty of nature from the vantage point of their gentle well-trained horse. When I visit next (from upstate NY), I look forward to riding these trails again.

We spent a really delightful afternoon with Diamond Jim, the living history specialist, at the Florida Agriculture Museum. After a couple days in (lovely) St. Augustine, I was ready to learn something about Florida’s history for ordinary people. He’s highly knowledgeable and enthusiastic in explaining how families lived in the typical Florida cracker homestead and farmed their land to demonstrate the profit necessary to retain it. The animals all around are well cared for and a delight, especially for children. The farm had just greeted a new calf and darned if another one hadn’t made its appearance the morning we were there! Very highly recommended for anyone who wants to get outdoors and learn about late 19th/early 20th century life in Florida.
