The University of Florida in Gainesville may be best known for its football and basketball teams but the Harn Museum of Art is the cultural jewel of the campus. Located at Southwest 34th Street and Hull Road, in the Cultural Plaza area, it is a 112,800-square-foot facility, making it one of the largest university art museums in the South. The space includes 40,400 square feet of exhibition space, five garden spaces, a 250-seat auditorium, a museum store, a study center, a cafe and classroom spaces. Opened in 1990, the museum has a permanent collection and an array of temporary exhibitions. The permanent collection totals more than 11,300 objects, which are focused on African, Asian, modern and contemporary art, as well as photography. The collection includes works by Ansel Adams and Claude Monet. In 2005, the Harn expanded by more than 18,000 square feet with the opening of the Mary Ann Harn Cofrin Pavilion, which includes new educational and meeting areas and the Camellia Court Cafe, the first eatery for visitors of the Cultural Plaza. A new wing of 20,000 square feet is planned.

The Harn Museum of Art is simply wonderful. It doesn't feel large, but there's a lot of art to view. If you're nearby, it's well worth your time.

We spent about 1.5 hours at the museum. It has a variety of types of art. The pieces are well displayed with interesting write ups for each piece. We especially liked the photo section that had a combined exhibit of the building of the Hoover Dam and pictures from NASA.

Really pleased to have put this on the list. Large, varied collection with surprising strengths. Knocks your socks off that it's a University Museum, and as a free facility - just great. You don't generally see this selection of the heavy hitters 1875-1920 at this level, it's well selected and yes there are 'names' on display but the supporting cast is at the same level. French Moderns, Monet to Matisse - see this it ends 1/4/26. There's some regionalism too, but even here this is good stuff, not haphazard - and def not 'the Highwaymen' level (no offense). Samplings of Asia, Africa, thoughtful more modern stuff, photograph, textiles. This is a museum I would return to - even if I might check what currently on first. Oh yes, it's FREE. (And free to park too - at least one lot over anyway)

Harn Museum of Art is a wonderful museum located on the University of Florida campus. Admission is free (confirm hours and parking fees before visit). There was free weekend parking during a holiday weekend but the parking lot might be limited to staff and students during the weekdays. We easily spent 2 hours at the museum.Harn is a small museum but what is displayed is impressive. The breadth of exhibits was amazing including costume/textiles, photography, Asian art, contemporary artists and modern art. There are outdoor spaces too. We especially enjoyed the Florida landscapes displayed in the exhibit titled Florida Impressions.
