tripadvisorThe Transformer Station has all the necessary hallmarks of a place that should be mobbed by the contemporary artworld cognoscenti. A former industrial building redone by a contemporary architect in a neighborhood filled with industrial buildings and the closest that Ohio gets to hipsters. The institution displays the collection of the Bidwells who have just pulled off the coup of putting together the Front triennial.I’ve been a number of times and I’ve not previously written a review as I was hoping for a visit that would make me a believer. I think the issue is that the place is a little too small and I don’t have the same taste as the Bidwells so it’s easy to come away not being particularly interested by what I see. For a place that focuses on early career artists, it all feels a little too pat, a little too earnest, a little too art school. I don’t feel the energy and the new voices that I would hope from young artists starting out.I’ll still go back if for no other reason than I immensely respect what the Bidwells are trying to do and they are doing something serious and important.
