Travel half a mile south of Lake Calhoun on William Berry Parkway and you will find a lake that will make you wish summer were 12 months long. Named for the wife of Colonel Harry Leavenworth, the first commander of Fort Anthony (later named Fort Snelling), Lake Harriet is a lovely area consisting of sandy beaches, rose and rock gardens, a popular band shell and some of the city's most palatial homes. The Lake Harriet Trolley leaves from the lake's northwest curve, and Beards Plaisance, a large sheltered picnic area, occupies the southwest corner. The northwest shore is also home to the Lake Harriet Band Shell and refectory from which the Queen of the Lakes paddlewheel boat departs. The Lake Harriet Rose Garden, also known as Lyndale Park, located on the northeast corner of the lake, boasts some 250 different varieties of roses. This lovely sanctuary is a meticulously cared for and fragrant oasis of blooming flowers adjacent to a tranquil Japanese rock garden.

tripadvisorHarriet is Well Worth a Visit! We parked on W Minnehaha Parkway. What a terrific street name. Anyhow, when we visited Minneapolis, we experienced really mild, beautiful weather, and opted for a morning walk around Lake Harriet. As we walked, we noted that hundreds of walkers, joggers, and runners also took a spin around the lake wearing purple t-shirts. Apparently it was their annual Lyme disease awareness day, which was very nice to see. This writer reckons that ninety minutes would be ample time for a leisurely walk around the lake plus a side jaunt over to the rose garden. I am very glad we went here.
MoreOne of the several lakes in the city of Minneapolis that make up the Chain of Lakes. It is a beautiful area and while maybe not as photogenic as Lake of the Isles or as fun as Bde Maka Ska, it is arguably the most pleasant of the lakes to experience. There is a paved walking and biking trail that encircles the lake and connects to these other nearby lakes. There are relaxed beaches on the eastern and southern shores of the lake and boating and wind surfing is available. The Lake Harriet Bandshell is located on the northern end of the lake and hosts live outdoor concerts. A pleasant Rose Garden can be found near the southeastern shore.
MoreA great spot to relax while watchig the sailboats, take a walk , have some snacks, specially when the weather is so nice .
MoreThis is such a beautiful area! We enjoyed walking along the path/lake and taking it all in. The water is so crystal clear. Lots of sailboats, even some people in the water! Yes, it was in October! lol
MoreBeautiful easy walk a lot of people running biking and walking dogs. Swim beach, rent kayaks and have a treat or a bite near the band shell.
