tripadvisorMy wife and I travel to enjoy performances from a wide range of regional operas as well as the occasional trip to New York to see the Met. Rigoletto was our first experience with the Kentucky Opera and we loved the performance. The singing was top notch as were the production values. We plan to go back next year. The Brown Theatre is a real gem.
MoreI have always enjoyed visiting the Kentucky Center for the Arts, and the visit this summer to see “Momma Mia’” was no exception. Great music and acting by the touring cast. Enjoy!
MoreYour reaction is probably similar to what I received when I told my co-workers that I was going to the opera for my anniversary, good luck with that... and a grimace. There are some connotations associated with the opera: Pretentious, boring, outdated. My wife and I (both lovers of music and performing arts in general) slunk into the theater with apprehension, self conscious of we were wearing the right color jacket, if our belts were dressy enough. All of that melted away the moment the show started. The production was Three Decembers by Jake Heggie, a modern opera that was playful, entertaining, easy to follow, IN ENGLISH, genuine, and equally heartwarming and heartbreaking. The operatic singing seemed to capture the gravity of situations more than 'Broadway' singing or spoken word can, while also accentuating a note of irony when jokes are belted out with maximum vibrato. Hats off to the Kentucky opera for bringing a modern accessible production for us plebs to enjoy. I will be back for Show Boat in Feb 2016!
