I never heard about this but totally enjoyed it. Nice tropical garden, good venue for a small wedding or party or just to document from the city. Peaceful

I visited Sunken Gardens in St. Petersburg, Florida, for the first time in the late 1940s. Located at 1825 4th Street North in the city's Historic Old Northeast neighborhood, the four-acre botanical gardens are a short distance from my late grandmother's home. The gardens were established in 1903 and are one of the oldest roadside tourist attractions in the United States. Historically, they are an important example of a 1930s Florida roadside commercial attraction, the oldest on Florida's West Coast. The gardens currently contain over 500 species of tropical and subtropical plants amidst pools and cascading waterfalls, lushly planted in a collection of more than 50,000 tropical plants and flowers. They include a Japanese garden, cactus garden, butterfly garden and Chilean flamingos. Plants include royal palms, bougainvilleas, water lilies, shrimp plants and fruit trees. The gardens also house 11 parrots, five macaws, four Amazons, a kookaburra and two cockatoos. The property also includes a large building originally known as the Sanitary Public Market, a Mediterranean Revival style arcade with twin Moorish towers, cast stone trim and tile roof that was constructed in 1926-27. It once was the world's largest gift shop and a wax museum. Today, it is the home of the Great Explorations Children's Museum. Sunken Gardens was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

Bring water because it a hot and muggy experience due to the rainforest like setting. Even in July there were lots of flowers still blooming. I loved the little lizards, birds and butterflies. It took about 2.5 hours to go through the exhibit. Definitely worth visiting again.

I love Sunken Gardens and I've been coming here since I was a kid (which was a very long time ago). It's a beautiful and relaxing thing to do on a very hot day. We loved the plants, flamingos and other birds, and the tortoise. Lots of gorgeous butterflies too!
