When this majestic, yet modest house was built in 1923 by lumber baron William Dowling, the genius inventor Thomas Edison spent his winters down the street. Since then it has operated as a private residence and then a couple of stints as an inn until its most recent incarnation as a B&B. The Hibiscus House has a superb location right next to many attractions in the historic downtown River District and everything, from the property to the rooms, is beautifully maintained. Throughout the interior, the house still retains many pieces of furniture and other fixtures from when it was built over a hundred years ago.

tripadvisorWe stayed in the Parrot Room, our granddaughter was across the hall in the Flamingo Room. Both rooms are very spacious and decorated with fun colors and fabrics to match their theme. The Parrot room has a walk in shower. I did not investigate the Flamingo Room. Breakfast consisted of instant oatmeal, cold cereals, granola bars, bread and bagels for toasting, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, a variety of fruit, coffee and tea, milk and juices. A very nice start to our day. Cookies were set out every night. There is outside seating for every room. We enjoyed playing cards at one of the tables until darkness and mosquitoes sent us inside. The Hibiscus House is within walking of the Edison Ford Museum as well as the historic area on First Street where unique restaurants, shops and art galleries can be found. Communication from management was great in providing Precheck in information as well as information on where to eat and what to do.
MoreEddy E. was great at communicating! We got regular emails approaching our arrival date on what to expect, local restaurants & places to visit, etc. The day of our arrival we received an email with the code to enter our room and other check-in instructions. We stayed in the Turtle Room on the first floor and had a parking spot right outside our exterior door! It was wonderful. Accommodations were comfy and spacious enough for two with our own bathroom. The ~3cu. fridge had an actual freezer and was big enough for some staples and leftovers. The common area had seating for dining - Continental breakfast or BYO - a Keurig, hot/cold water station, cookies at night, all sorts of amenities. Alyssa was a constant staff member who was kind, helpful, and quite engaging. It was a VERY COZY B&B. Location on McGregor made it convenient to everything in the area e.g. Publix and the Edison/Ford Estates were in walking distance. It was also easy to navigate around and find back roads to destinations.
MoreWe would stay at Hibiscus House again in a heartbeat. Clean, beautifully decorated, so helpful and the hospitality is five star. The room was perfect and there wasn't a thing the owner hasn't thought of. Location is perfect. We walked to the downtown area for a food tour meet up and shopping. City is safe and clean.
MoreWe spent the weekend at the Hibiscus house and can't say enough positive things! Location was convenient for everything. Publix across the street. Less than a mile walk to downtown (monthly Music Walk was happening when we got there). Easy drive to Sanibel. Lots of other attractions close by that we did not have time to take advantage of. We stayed in the Seashell room, which was bright and roomy with our own balcony. Everything was immaculately clean. Games, beach towels/chairs, and TONS of books to borrow during your stay. Would definitely stay again. Highly recommend:)
MoreMy husband and I stayed for four nights in the Seashell Room (one of two rooms on the second floor). Excellent check-in experience with a code sent before arrival. Your own little parking lot with rooms that have an interior and exterior entrance/ exit. What was great was the small amenities: beach chairs/ towels/ sunscreen/ boogie boards to borrow. As with all B & B's, it was quiet, relaxed, beverages and snacks available at all hours, and mostly adults. The room did have issues with temperature regulation, as others have noted, but we had a ceiling fan if we were warm and blankets if we were cold (we were both, at various times). It was nicely located and, though on a main drag, not too noisy. The Publix just down and across the road was an added plus. Not a generic hotel experience. We would stay again.
