Six Mile Cypress Slough Preserve Park ·$$

The Six Mile Cypress Slough is one of many preserved and pristine swamplands spread throughout southwest Florida. The highlight of the preserve is the 1.2-mile (1.9 kilometer) boardwalk, a wood-planked corridor that runs through the 2,200-acre (890 hectare) wetland, where guests can see alligators, wild boar, otters and much more. During the dry season (October to June), birds like herons and egrets flock to the flag ponds which make it a perfect place for birders. There are guided tours year-round, and self-guided tour brochures in the LEED-certified interpretive center.

Nicely done. We saw dragonflies, butterflies, lizards, and a turtle. Anyone who loves nature will enjoy it. The animals aren’t guaranteed—it’s just nature. There’s a small souvenir shop and restrooms available.

We visit the Slough as often as possible. It never disappoints any season of the year. Beautiful place with great amount of wildlife, slow down and stay quiet to see all the beautiful birds in the slough. This is our happy place!

We loved using the spare hours we had before our flight to walk through the Slough! First we met Debi and Brad at the visitor's center - they are so engaging and fun to talk to! We quickly paid a small fee for parking ($1/hr), and walked in. We first met Rose at the shelter at the big pond (Gator Lake), who showed us some nesting woodpeckers right behind it. The walk kept us about 3-5 feet above the ground on solid wood with railings the whole time. There were some people just using it to walk and talk, others really took their time seeking wildlife. We saw fish, birds, even an owl! Definitely worth a walk, it's relaxing not having to worry about where you're stepping or where to go - just follow the trail.

Walked the 1.2 mile elevated walkway of the Slough (Pronounced Slew). Took 1 hour and 10 minutes as I hurried near the end to get to the bathroom located near the entrance. Very enjoyable outdoor experience. Saw fish, birds and alligators. Was told by visitors that there are 2 large male gators in gator lake and a smaller female in otter pond. Saw one of the larger gators through a spotting scope. Very nice family activity, highly recommended.

FL is in a drought, so the ponds are smaller than usual. Still saw wildlife, just not as abundant. Still worth the trip. Bring binoculars to see alligators and animals.
