tripadvisorI visited Nontando in December 2022. I have collected Africa art for many years, with most coming from my travels. Firstly, Gary is a sweetheart of a man. Knowlegdable, helpful and went out of his way to help me find the perfect items. His enthusiasm for his store is contagious. I spent close to an hour browsing his store and bought some amazing things. I felt like I was visiting Africa again. His treasures have added an exotic flare to my home. I live in Massachusetts and have a home in Florida. I will return to his store everytime I'm back in Sarasota to spend to my hearts desire!! Thank you,Gary
MoreThe racist owner followed me around the store like a hawk while 4 Caucasian people shopped without issue. I will never come back. Your trips to Africa have done you no good.
MoreNeed a unique gift! Check out this little shop in Golf Gate Village!Hand made gifts from Africa. Craftsmanship from many countries.Stop and take a look!
MoreI loved the unique items from Africa. This is a great store to browse & look for interesting treasures made by African artisans. The owner, Gary Stern, was born and raised in South Africa. He travels annually to the African continent to find unusual & beautiful items for his retail & online (offering free shipping) business. We bought a lovely maraca, made in Madagascar. Think you'll really enjoy shopping at this one of a kind store!
MoreVisiting Nontando is like visiting an Africa Art Center. When you walk in you are met by beautiful crafts and artwork from Africa. The walls are lined with beautiful masks and the cases are filled with incredible carvings all done by African artists. Nontando also has beautiful weavings, including placemats and wall hangings and jewelry. The store also has lovely ceramics and many great unusual gifts. Prices are extraordinarily reasonable. You can also find gifts there made by artisans in workshops designed to help develop local economies and recycle waste materials. I purchased some very cool baskets made from recycled telephone wire.Best of all, Nontando has Gary, the owner from South Africa who does all the buyings and is incredibly knowledgeable about everything in the store, from what country and what tribe the work is from.Nontando is tucked away in Gulfgate, the old Italian neighborhood with mom and pop shops and restaurants, a nice place to spend a few hours when you need a break from the beach.
