tripadvisorVisited this gem while visiting a friend. We participated in a craft class which was a lot of fun. All of the supplies were provided and the instructor was very helpful and laid back. I definitely had a great time and will definitely go again the next time I visit my friend.
MoreKindergarten for adults is their thing and they do it well and VERY affordably. This adorable shop in the Broad Ave Arts District makes anyone feel like they can be artsy and crafty for a few hours. We did a private party and chose the glassblasting class which was perfect! We all left with a little memento that we created and got to enjoy each other's company and were able to bring our own beer/wine. The popcorn machine churns out some great popcorn and if you need a creative break - check out the items they have for sale. I will definitely be taking more of these classes!
MoreFive in One has a great balance of local flavor, unique shopping, art projects and entertainment. Check the on line calendar for events and to register for classes (these require a reasonable fee). The projects offered are fun, skill building and a bit out of the ordinary. Learn to make glitter t shirts, cast chocolate, sandblast images on glasses, gold leaf taxidermy, woodcut making and printing. Interesting stuff for a variety of skill levels and interests in a supportive environment. I have done classes with my teenage daughter and with friends and have made friends at the various classes. They also offer high quality, hand made goods directly from artisans and events like Bingo and comedy shows. I HIGHLY recommend Five in One.
MoreKindergarten for Grown Ups is the perfect tag line for Five in One Social Club. There is always something fascinating going that people can get into--from making stained glass to making up like a zombie to wonderful fabric art projects and print making. The shop is full of lovely, affordable Made in Memphis art, crafts, and other original design work from local artists and artisans. I wish I lived close enough to go every week and see what's new.
MoreWe take an annual road trip with our nephews and this year we passed through Memphis. The road trip is meant for discovery and we make it a point to seek out the local flavor and family owned businesses. For Memphis eating we chose Gus's Fried Chicken-what a treat! We had to walk a few blocks over to the park by the Mississippi River to stroll off the effects of that delicious dinner. We also visited the Dixon Galleries and Gardens which had a pretty cool exhibit of Memphis based artist's posters and then we spent a thoughtful afternoon at the Civil Rights Museum. We happened to be visiting Memphis over Father's Day weekend which brings me to the point of this review. Again, we wanted to do something local and different from the main tourist attractions. We had heard about the Five in One Social Club offering a glass etching class and decided to give it a try. The Five in One Social Club is owned by husband and wife artists who opened the shop as a place to show off their work and the work of other local artists. It is located on Broad Avenue which looks to house small locally owned business from one end of the avenue to the other. At first the nephews weren't very into the idea of going to anything that contained the word class in it. They had just been set free from school and weren't too keen about attending any class-but within minutes we are sure glad we decided to give this class a try. As you enter the social club you are greeted by Lucy, a beautiful black dog and the owners, Michael and Alice, who teach the classes which are held in the rear of their store in area referred to as the Clubhouse. The store itself was pretty cool-items made by local artists and also unique embroidered hats and limited edition tee shirts. Our nephews both got tee shirts made in the store on the ink press named Pearl. The whole store is all about things made in Memphis which is cool. The glass etching class was the highlight of the weekend! You could bring your own glass or purchase one from the store-the nephews each purchased a pint glass to make as a gift for their dad as a Father's Day gift. We all learned how to transfer the designs we made onto the glass and then we were taught how to sandblast the designs into the glass. It was lots of fun doing something creative and when we were finished we each had something real to take home from Memphis. And what a great way to get to know the locals. There were about fifteen other people in the class with us and over the three hours we were there we got lots of recommendations of their favorite things to see and do in Memphis. Thanks to Five in One Social Club for offering us this wonderful opportunity to meet the locals in Memphis and to learn something new. And one more thing-the Social Club is located right down the street from a local brewery-so if you are looking for the real deal-visit the Social Club for some shopping or a class and then take a stroll down Broad Avenue all the way to the Wiseacre Brewery, every store in between is a mom and pop shop.
