Though Appleton Museum of Art was established in 1982 by Arthur I. Appleton, it only opened its doors in 1987 after three years of construction. The original plan was to exhibit the impressive private collection of its founder but now it has a repertoire of European artwork from the 17th through the 19th Centuries, 18th and 19th-century American visual art, Contemporary works, Asian, African, Islamic and Pre-Columbian antiquities and objet d'art. Housed in a two-floor Italian travertine limestone building, it spans across 81,610 square feet (7581.82 square meters). It consists of five galleries for permanent exhibitions, classrooms, an art library, workshop, an auditorium, conference rooms and a courtyard cafe. It also offers educational programs for different age groups. Art enthusiasts can also avail of their Trips 'N' Tours to various museums and historic throughout the state and more.

tripadvisorThe Art space is well laid out and ideal for ages 2-10, or older if they are willing to sit and make something.Thankfully we visited in first free Saturday bc before we could walk in we were told no drinks indicting the closed water bottle I was carrying. I had checked the website and verified water bottles were allowed but went back to put it in the car anyway. Two floors, restrooms at either end of both and water fountains in the rest area.I’d say go to enjoy AC for 90 minutes, but don’t pay!
MoreWe've been to the top mega museums throughout the country and always find the Appleton a great visit. The exhibits are always fresh and meaningful and the atmosphere is relaxed and open. There are two floors with a connecting elevator and ample restrooms. Parking is easy and the gift shop offers a variety of products. Briefings and seminars are held and the ampitheatre is very good. Nice experience.

MoreAlright, here's Stepping into the Appleton Museum is like wandering into a surreal dreamscape where art defies gravity. Forget your typical sterile museum experience; this place pulses with a vibrant, almost rebellious energy. The collections aren't just displayed, they're staged, creating unexpected dialogues between classical masterpieces and contemporary oddities. The building itself feels like a living sculpture, with light and shadow dancing across its unconventional architecture. You might find yourself pondering ancient Roman busts one minute and then stumbling upon a mind-bending installation that challenges your perception of reality the next. It's an adventure for the senses, a place where curiosity is not only welcomed but encouraged. The Appleton isn't just a museum; it's an experience that lingers long after you've left. It's a place that ignites conversations, provokes thought, and reminds you that art is not just something to be observed, but something to be felt, questioned, and ultimately, embraced in all its beautiful, chaotic glory.
MoreWe stopped here for about an hour an a half to view the collection. Much of the collection was from a Chicagoan that ran an electric company. Very nice diverse collection that was well displayed. Enjoyed the museum a lot - and very friendly and helpful staff.
