An ancient structure, Mabry Hazen House is perched atop the craggy Mabry's Hill in Knoxville. Also called Joseph Alexander Mabry Jr. House and Evelyn Hazen House, it was built for Joseph Alexander Mabry, Jr, in the year 1858. The edifice remains a fine example of Greek Revival and Italianate architectural styles. It was extended in 1886, which included remodeling its first floor. After the demise of Evelyn, the historic building continues to serve as a history museum. All the ancestral belongings and furniture have been wonderfully preserved. The museum's exhaustive collection is known to be one of the most extensive ones in the country.

tripadvisorWe had a pastport book which means we didn't pay admission (we did when we brought the book a good deal if you plan on seeing all the house in Knoxville). The gentleman who gave us the tour was very knowledgeable about the family and the house. He gave us a 20-minute overview of the family then we moved into the tour of the home. We also talked about the enslaved people and domestic workers of the home. He also talked about what each family had done to expand the house and what the last person's wishes has been for the home. I think we saved the best tour for last. They do have parking and a bathroom in the house. They are doing work on the house also, Im not sure what but they seemed to stop during tours.
MoreVery interesting family history and the tour guide was great! My daughter asked about more dresses on the property and the guide and director graciously got some from storage to show her.
MoreThis place is a Knoxville treasure. I’ve been a handful of times through the years for various reasons: attending a wedding, annual Halloween Victorian seance, Night at the Museum, and most recently their Garden Party. Their docents are so friendly, the house is spectacular. I learn something new every time I’m there. Highly recommend signing up for their newsletter!
MoreWhat a great house! We were fortunate to have the museum director, Patrick, give us a tour of this beautiful property. He told us so many interesting facts about the families that lived and worked in the home. The museum is fortunate to have a huge collection of original items that belonged to the families so most everything you see is something that would have been a part of the people's day-to-day existence who experienced so much life inside the historic walls. Though Patrick used his hour wisely (and even ran over a bit, which we appreciated), there was still so much of the Mabry-Hazen story to tell that I found myself researching the family on line after we left. While the house itself is lovely, its beauty is magnified by the peaceful, shady hilltop that surrounds it. We brought a picnic lunch and enjoyed a relaxing, private meal there after our tour. Mabry-Hazen is truly a gem. It is a must-see for history buffs when visiting the Knoxville area.
MoreThe guide was fantastic. He told the story of the families in a way that held our attention. He was well informed and honest about what he knew. The house has a great selection of original family pieces. The family story is saucy!
